Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Box Office Breaks 22-Year Jim Carrey Record

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

has just broken a Jim Carrey box office record that has been standing strong for 22 years. Directed by Jeff Fowler, who also directed the two previous Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the third film based on the popular Sega video game hit theaters in December, following Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails as they team up to face off against Shadow and Carrey’s Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. On top of positive Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reviews, the film has been a major box office success, surpᴀssing the previous two installments.

Box Office Mojo reports that Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in what is sure to mark its last major box office milestone, has now grossed $486 million worldwide, comprising $235.6 million domestic and $250.4 million internationally. This new total pushes the video game adaptation past Bruce Almighty‘s $484 million total from 2003, making it the new highest-grossing movie of Carrey’s career. This latest milestone comes as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 remains available on VOD and on Paramount+. Check out the chart below of Carrey’s top five highest-grossing movies:

What Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s New Record Means For Jim Carrey

Robotnik’s Time In The Sonic Franchise May Not Be Over Just Yet

Jim Carrey squinting suspiciously as Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Carrey hasn’t been particularly active as an actor over the last few years, with the three Sonic the Hedgehog movies marking his biggest projects. He starred in Kidding from 2018 to 2020, with 2016’s Dark Crimes marking his last major feature film before taking on the role of Robotnik in 2020. It’s clear that Carrey has a continued interest in playing the character, too, and he told ScreenRant in December that he enjoys how much the franchise means to families and that his return as Robotnik comes down to whether Fowler approaches him with a compelling idea.

With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 having been confirmed and scheduled for a release in spring 2027, it seems like Fowler will indeed be pitching Carrey on another Robotnik return. Given how successful and well-received the third outing has been, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Carrey return as the eccentric villain once more. Considering the franchise’s trend so far, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has the potential to beat the third film’s record, potentially becoming Carrey’s new highest-grossing movie.

Our Take On Carrey’s New Box Office Record

Carrey Should Return To Movies Outside Sonic The Hedgehog

Not only is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 the highest-grossing entry in the franchise, but it’s also the entry that fared the best with critics. The movie effectively blends humor and action, and having Carrey playing two different versions of Robotnik only enhances the experience.

Considering how much joy Carrey is bringing audiences in this new role, it’s a shame that he isn’t starring in more movies outside the Sonic franchise. Clearly, there is a demand for his particular comedic style, especially in the family movie space. It remains to be seen how Robotnik will factor into the follow-up to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but the movie evidently made quite the splash at the box office.
