What Movie Goldie Hawn Won An Oscar For: Her Academy Awards History Explained & Why It’s So Impressive

Goldie Hawn presented an award at the Oscars 2025 alongside Andrew Garfield, and the actress is also a previous Oscar winner. Hawn and Garfield were at the 97th Academy Award to present Best Animated Feature, which went to Flow, and Best Animated Short, which went to In the Shadow of the Cypress. While handing out the awards to the Oscars 2025 winners, though, it also raised the question of Hawn’s own history at the ceremony.

Hawn has a long, storied career in Hollywood, having worked in movies since her debut in 1968’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. She’s gone on to star in a wide range of movies, from The Sugarland Express to Private Benjamin, and Overboard, all the way through to Netflix’s The Christmas Chronicles movies. But when it comes to the Oscars, she made her mark pretty quickly.

Goldie Hawn’s Oscars History: Nominations & Wins Explained

Hawn Won With Her Very First Nomination

In just her third film role, Hawn won Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards in 1970 for her performance in Cactus Flower. Directed by Gene Saks, Hawn starred in the screwball comedy alongside Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman.

Hawn played the role of Toni Simmons, who at the beginning of the movie attempts to take her own life after being stood up by her boyfriend, who she believes to be married. He then has his secretary pose as his wife and meet Toni, and the comedy ensues from there.

The actress has been nominated for an Oscar again since, the second time in the Best Actress Category. That came in 1981, for the comedy Private Benjamin. In that movie, Hawn played Judy Benjamin, who signs up for the military after her husband dies on their wedding night. Hawn lost out on that occasion, with Sissy Spacek winning for Coal Miner’s Daughter.

Hawn Wasn’t Even 25-Years-Old When She Won The Academy Award

Hawn’s Oscar win isn’t just impressive because it came so early in her career, but also for how young she was at the time. The actress picked up the Best Supporting Actress award at the age of 24 years and 197 days, making her the then 4th youngest person to win the Oscar in that category.

Just as impressive is that Hawn is one of only 13 actors to win in any category under the age of 25. It’s an extremely rare feat – one which has actually never happened in the Best Actor category – and engraved Hawn’s name in Oscars history.
