Director Julius Onah reveals how President Ross’ Captain America: Brave New World ending suits the MCU’s Red Hulk. Captain America: Brave New World is probably the most important installment in Thaddeus Ross’ MCU story, as it culminates his longtime hatred for superhumans with his transformation into Red Hulk. In Captain America: Brave New World‘s ending, Thaddeus Ross is removed from office and sent to the Raft, where Sam Wilson arranges a reunion between Ross and his daughter Betty, who makes her first on-screen appearance since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
In an interview with THR, Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah addresses the bittersweet ending Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross received, reuniting with his daughter while imprisoned. Onah explains that Ross needed to atone for his actions, but also “reconnect with his daughter,” and Sam Wilson had to be involved. Read Onah’s full comments below:
We always knew the story needed to end in an emotional place that felt satisfying and felt cathartic. So it just becomes a question of how do you go about doing that? And a big part of Ross’s journey is also his desire to reconnect with his daughter. And knowing that Sam’s emotional intelligence is so acute, it became, “Wow, what if there was a way to have him utilize that to resolve Ross’s story and reinforce this theme of empathy?”
What Julius Onah’s Captain America: Brave New World Comments Mean For Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross
Harrison Ford’s President Ross Is Neither A Hero Nor A Villain
Thaddeus Ross made questionable decisions prior to the events of Captain America: Brave New World. Ross created Abomination in order to capture Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, tried to take control of the Avengers’ operations through the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War, and manipulated Samuel Sterns into working for him in secret throughout the years. But all throughout Captain America: Brave New World, Ross tries to do things right as President of the United States. President Ross defends the Adamantium treaty in order to maintain world peace and defend his legacy, and he only loses control of his Red Hulk powers because Samuel Sterns pushes him to the limit.
President Ross does all he can to be a respectable president, but he still needs to answer for Red Hulk’s destruction. While Captain America could easily send him to the Raft and forget about him, he goes one step beyond and makes sure that he receives due process and feels comfortable. Sam Wilson also materializes Betty Ross’ MCU return as a favor to Thaddeus Ross after their reunion is interrupted by the president’s transformation into Red Hulk.
Our Take On Julius Onah’s President Ross Comments
Harrison Ford’s President Ross Has A Promising MCU Future After Captain America: Brave New World
Thaddeus Ross has been present in the MCU for seventeen years, and his antagonistic role in Captain America: Brave New World could suit him as an appropriate conclusion to his MCU journey. But Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross has potential for many future MCU appearances, and Marvel’s decision to send him to prison instead of killing him off prove there may be more Ross appearances in the near future. In fact, Captain America: Brave New World may have rewritten President Ross’ ending to keep him alive for upcoming projects.
