A24’s latest movie with Iron Claw director Sean Durkin, Deep Cuts, casts Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler as the leads. Ronan and Butler are among the most acclaimed actors of their generation, with both receiving Oscar nominations over the years. The former is a four-time nominee, while the latter received his first nomination for Elvis in 2023. Meanwhile, Durkin’s The Iron Claw was among the most acclaimed films of 2023, with ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki giving it eight out of 10 stars.
According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the pair will play the main couple in Deep Cuts. Ronan will also produce. Durkin is also adapting the movie, which is based on Holly Brickley’s newly-released debut novel. So far, Ronan and Butler are the only confirmed cast members, and a release date is under wraps. The synopsis reads:
Set in the 2000s, Deep Cuts is a love story about two music-obsessed twentysomethings navigating the messy realities of ambition, belonging and adulthood over the course of an era-defining decade.
What This Means For A24 & Deep Cuts
The Project Is Already Off To A Strong Start
Ronan and Butler’s casting in Deep Cuts marks their first time working with each other and Durkin. Ronan has been something of an established star ever since her Oscar-nominated breakout role in 2007’s Atonement, most recently putting in buzzy performances in The Outrun and Blitz. Meanwhile, Butler’s star has steadily been on the rise since Elvis. Their established talent makes an onscreen partnership incredibly appealing, and it seems likely they will attract a sizable audience.
Furthermore, Durkin’s previous work and A24’s track record give Deep Cuts a great foundation. The Iron Claw, which starred Zac Efron as real-life wrestler Kevin Von Erich, earned praise for how it handled the very emotional story. Durkin has proven himself skilled at handling dramatic, poignant character studies, making him an excellent choice to depict a story such as Deep Cuts‘. A24 is one of the most respected studios currently making movies; any project from them elicits excitement and interest. All of these factors make Deep Cuts an enticing prospect.
Our Take On Ronan And Butler’s Casting In Deep Cuts
As it stands now, Deep Cuts looks to be another unique, character-driven romance for A24’s growing filmography. By combining Durkin, Ronan, and Butler’s talents, the upcoming film could offer a stylized perspective of relationships and music during the 2000s. It could even lead to additional awards attention for Ronan and Butler. For those who enjoy romantic dramas and the talent involved, Deep Cuts is certainly a film to keep an eye on.
