Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will bring the Russo Brothers back to the MCU, with the directing duo teasing surprising stories to come. The story of Avengers: Doomsday is expected first, scheduled for release in May 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars’ release date is set for a year later, providing a two-movie arc akin to the Russo Brothers’ last MCU projects, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. As two vital upcoming Marvel movies, the Russos are adequately teasing what is to come, promising two films that strike differences between themselves and the MCU’s past.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for their Netflix movie The Electric State, the Russos were asked about Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. When asked if the duo is looking for new faces for the upcoming films, Joe Russo stated “I think we’re always looking for new faces, cause there’s always new stories to tell,” before further outlining the two movies on the whole:
“I think these movies are gonna be a surprise to people. We found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us, but, we think, very radical, and I think it’s gonna challenge audiences.”
Overall, this somewhat follows the tone of the Russos’ past MCU films. While this concept of challenging audiences may seem different to the MCU as a whole, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, specifically, contained several surprising aspects. As it turns out, this is set to continue in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
What The Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Comments Mean
The Casting Announcements For The Two Avengers Movies Could Be Sources Of Surprise
Regarding what these comments mean from the Russo Brothers, they could link to the casting announcements for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Undoubtedly the biggest announcement was the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, the overarching antagonist of the two movies. Given RDJ’s past as Tony Stark, his inclusion alone will be enough to surprise general moviegoers who did not hear the news or challenge longtime fans of Marvel who loved Iron Man.
Reports have also indicated that Chris Evans will return in both movies, with rumors circulating that he is playing an evil version of Captain America, which was somewhat supported by the post-credit scene of Captain America: Brave New World that teased Doctor Doom’s Dark Avengers. If the two former heroic pillars of the MCU came back as villains, there is no doubt Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Doomsday can be described as radical. Beyond that, the multiversal elements and Doom’s reign of terror will likely continue to challenge audiences, just as the Russos have predicted.
Our Take On The Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Comments
I am already excited about Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but these comments from the Russo Brothers have only increased my anticipation. As someone who likes when franchises stray away from the norm and try to do something radical and different but with the same digestible tone and style, I am excited by the Russos insisting this was their plan with the two Avengers movies. I love Star Wars: The Last Jedi and I even liked Eternals more than most, so hearing that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will challenge audiences is exactly what I want to hear.
Moreover, I trust the Russos to be able to deliver on this promise in a way that does not make these movies as divisive as the two prior examples I provided. The Russos know the Marvel universe and have been clear about their love for Secret Wars in particular. Thankfully, though, the Russos are not content to simply translate the source material to the screen but are willing to surprise and challenge audiences where possible. Given the overall apathy that has been directed against the MCU in recent years, radical versions of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could be exactly what Marvel needs.
