Moana 2’s Streaming Release Date On Disney+ Confirmed

Moana 2‘s streaming release date on Disney+ has been confirmed. A sequel to 2016’s Moana, Disney’s animated sequel is set three years later, following the тιтular character as she reunites with the demigod Maui and gathers a wayfinding crew to locate the lost island of Motufetu, lift its curse, and restore the bond between the ocean’s people. Moana 2‘s voice cast includes Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles alongside Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Temuera Morrison, and many more.

Now, three months after its theatrical release, the sequel’s streaming release date has been confirmed. Announced directly by Disney, Moana 2 will be available to stream on Disney+ on March 12. This comes nearly one month after it was made available to rent or buy on digital platforms. Moana 2 will also be released on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 18.

What Moana 2’s Streaming Release Date Means For The Movie

It’s Sure To Be A Success

As a mᴀssive critical and commercial hit, Moana 2’s success is sure to carry over to streaming on Disney+. The highly-anticipated sequel was released in theaters on November 27 and went on to make just over $1 billion at the box office against its $150 million budget, becoming the third highest-grossing movie of 2024 behind Marvel’s ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine and Pixar’s sequel Inside Out 2, which are both also under the Disney umbrella. Moana 2 also notably outgrossed its predecessor, which made just over $687 million.

Moana 2 has also been a modest hit among critics. Though Moana 2‘s reviews are somewhat mixed, critics praised the sequel for its breathtaking animation, which renders it an enjoyable and vibrant adventure even though its story sometimes loses direction, and it may not be as inspired as the original. Moana 2 was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes, though it was shut out of the same category at the upcoming Academy Awards in place of Inside Out 2 and others.

The Oscars air on March 2 on ABC.

Moana 2 was originally developed as a Disney+ series before it was reworked into a theatrical sequel. The adjustment was said to be a strategic decision made by Disney to maximize revenue and profitability which, however cynical, has wholly paid off since Moana 2 made more than $1 billion at the box office and became the third highest-grossing movie of 2024. Moana 2 is now able to stream months later on Disney+, where it’s sure to be a success.
