Fear Street: Prom Queen Trailer Confirms Netflix Release Date, Hypes “New Era” For Netflix’s R. L. Stine Horror Franchise

Fear Street: Prom Queen

gets a new trailer, with author R. L. Stine introducing the first footage and release date for the movie. Following the success of the first three movies in the franchise, all of which were directed by Leigh Janiak and released in 2021, the haunted town of Shadyside is set to return in a new film from director Matt Palmer. Serving as an adaptation of Stine’s The Prom Queen, Fear Street: Prom Queen‘s story is set to take place in 1988 as Prom Queen candidates begin to vanish without a trace at Shadyside High.

IGN now shares the first trailer for Fear Street: Prom Queen, and it promises that a “new era” is coming for the franchise. In addition to featuring Stine himself introducing some quick clips from the film, including screaming high school students and an ax-wielding killer, the trailer confirms that the new Fear Street movie will release on Netflix on May 23. Check it out below:

What The Fear Street: Prom Queen Trailer Means For The Movie

How Prom Queen Differs From The Original Trilogy

Though it’s hard to pull too much from that trailer, it does look like the upcoming film will be closest in tone and setting to Fear Street Part One: 1994. That film features several extended sequences that take place within the walls of Shadyside High, and Prom Queen will seemingly double down on this location. Stine’s own introduction and the blood spatter in the trailer (as well as the precedent set by the previous three films) suggests the new film will feature some standout kills.

The Fear Street: Prom Queen cast includes Ariana Greenblatt, Katherine Waterston, Lili Taylor, Chris Klein, Ella Rubin, India Fowler, and Suzanna Son, among others. The previous three movies in the franchise had a lot of overlap in terms of casting, and it’s possible that the actors in this upcoming film will reprise their roles or play entirely new characters in whatever movies are still to come. Stine has previously revealed that three new Fear Street movies are in the works, speaking to the “new era” claims in the trailer.

Our Take On The New Fear Street: Prom Queen Trailer

The Original Horror Trilogy Set A High Bar

All three of the Fear Street movies were well-received by critics and audiences alike, and they were evidently viewership successes too, given that there are three more in development. With Prom Queen hailing from a new director and with an entirely new cast, it could face an uphill battle in terms of recreating the original trilogy’s popularity. If it succeeds, however, introducing compelling new characters while also featuring some shocking scares, it could pave the way for this franchise to continue for years down the road.

Fear Street Part Three: 1666 remains the highest-rated movie in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting a score of 89%.

Netflix has thus far struggled to launch a successful movie franchise, and Fear Street is arguably one of the few times the streamer has succeeded. It remains to be seen how audiences will respond to Fear Street: Prom Queen, but the new trailer certainly suggests it’s one to look forward to.
