James Gunn Gives Production Update on Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, Praises DCU Star Milly Alcock

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film gets an exciting update from James Gunn as the Girl of Steel gets ready for her DC Universe introduction. For the first time since 1984, Kara Zor-El is finally getting her own solo movie again, as Alcock will bring the famous Kryptonian heroine to life in the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” As of January 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is in production, getting a step closer to finally bringing the DC icon back to the big screen.

ScreenRant recently attended a DCU press event with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, where they spoke about the many projects that are currently in development or in the works, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. When speaking about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn revealed where the current status of Alcock’s DCU film, stating that they’re midway through filming while sharing the following:

James Gunn: Yeah, I think we’re midway through production now of Supergirl. It’s so scary every time I say it, but it’s been an extraordinary experience so far. The script was one of the first things that we greenlit when we got here. Ana turned in a marvelous first script that just kept getting better. She’s been a blessing, and Craig Gillespie was a dream for me. I, Tonya was one of my favorite movies, and he has been everything that I would hope for a director on a big project like this [when] working with him as a studio head. Which is weird to say, but I love working with him.

What James Gunn’s Supergirl Production Update Means

As the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cast is continuing filming, things are definitely moving in the right direction for the big 2026 installment. The DCU movie’s leading lady herself also received some major praise at the event, as Gunn elaborated on how Alcock was eyed as the next live-action version of Supergirl. Even before the launch of DC Studios, Gunn shared a story about how he had already imagined the House of the Dragon alum as the perfect Kara for a new Supergirl movie:

Milly Alcock? I don’t know if I’ve ever shared it, but you and I talked on the phone… It might’ve been before we got the job. We were talking about what we’d do, and Woman of Tomorrow was one of the first things that I brought up, even before we got the job, that I wanted to make, because it was a very different view of Supergirl and how she is in this world from the sweet thing that she usually is. He says, “Well, who would you cast?” And I said, “There’s this girl in House of the Dragon that I think would be amazing,” and she just fulfilled that. So, this has been wonderful, and watching the [progress] has been great.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s successful production is also coming from screenwriter Ana Nogueira, as Safran added that, “We’ve always viewed this transformative story as one of the cornerstones of our vision for the future of the DCU. As soon as we saw Ana Nogueira’s really stunning adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic book series, we knew that was going to be next in our story.” Ever since the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate was announced, it sounds like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was one of the projects that has had the most solid progression. That’s probably also why Nogueira is getting involved with another DCU project as she is reportedly writing a Teen тιтans live-action movie.

From everything Gunn and Safran shared about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, there will be a lot to look forward to with Alcock’s DCU movie when it arrives in theaters. With the rich story that comes from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, it will be fascinating to see how it gets adapted from page to screen. Hopefully, as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow gets closer to finishing production, more glimpses of the film will start to emerge sooner rather than later.
