Oscar Contender With 97% RT Score Crosses Rare Box Office Milestone

The Oscars are just around the corner, and that seems to have given one contender a box office boost. Some Oscar nominees have been huge successes at the box office so far. Wicked was the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024 and the highest-grossing nominee among the Best Picture contenders, making $728.1 million worldwide. Not far behind was Dune: Part Two, which brought in over $714 worldwide. Even surprise horror Best Picture nominee The Substance was impressive in its field, taking home $77 million worldwide.

As is the case in typical years, the Best Picture race includes both American-made Hollywood films, such as A Complete Unknown, and international тιтles like Emilia Pérez. The same was true last year, when The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall earned Best Picture nominations from an otherwise Hollywood-dominated list. The inclusion of international features keeps the Best Picture race interesting, as it provides a wider array of perspectives. Now, one of these international nominees has recently scored a rare box office milestone.

Best Picture Nominee I’m Still Here Crosses Rare Domestic Box Office Milestone

And It Is The First Brazilian Movie To Cross It In 22 Years

Eunice cries in I'm Still Here still

I’m Still Here has gotten past a rare but important box office milestone. The biographical drama tells the true story of Eunice Paiva, a woman who fought for justice after her husband, a former member of Brazil’s Congress, was taken prisoner when the country went into military dictatorship. The film features a critically acclaimed performance from Fernanda Torres, who became the second Brazilian person ever to be nominated for an acting Oscar. The movie is also competing in the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories, and was considered a somewhat surprising nominee.

The first Brazilian person to be nominated for an acting Oscar was Torres’ own mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated for Best Actress for her leading role in Central Station.

As per Box Office Mojo, I’m Still Here has now pᴀssed a major box office milestone. I’m Still Here has made it beyond the $4 million mark at the domestic box office, with a total of $4.25 million to date. It is the first Brazilian movie to cross this target in the United States in over 20 years, as the last movie to cross it was City of God in 2002. Accounting for its international gross, I’m Still Here‘s worldwide box office now sits at $27.2 million.

Our Take On I’m Still Here’s Box Office Milestone

This Ups The Movie’s Chances At Best International Feature

I’m Still Here‘s box office success means that people are seeing the movie more than a typical film from Brazil. This feat is a positive step in the direction of I’m Still Here taking home an Oscar. While the Best Picture and Best Actress fields are highly compeтιтive, the movie has an increasing sH๏τ at winning Best International Feature. Previously, the frontrunner was Emilia Pérez, but its chances have been diminished by recent controversy. With this and its box office momentum in mind, I’m Still Here may just have what it takes to walk away with an Oscar.
