I Can’t Believe I Never Realized Matt Damon Was In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2

With how many flashy cameos ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 features, Matt Damon’s role feels especially sneaky. The beauty of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool films is how they can tap into the meta nature of the character. Of course, other MCU projects have featured some high-profile cameos that feel like nods to fans. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool cameos feel particularly special though because of the level of self-awareness that the franchise has. ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine is the most recent reminder of that considering how many beloved characters made a return, but the other ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool films aren’t far behind when it comes to entertaining audiences.

The most notable cameos of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 were undoubtedly the appearance of Fox’s X-Men. The likes of James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, and Evan Peters returned to portray the team of mutants, hiding in the X-Mansion in an attempt to avoid ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. Though his cameo was only a few seconds, the biggest name to appear was perhaps Brad Pitt as Vanisher. Matt Damon was the other A-list celebrity to make a fun cameo, but his appearance likely went over most viewers’ heads for good reason.

Matt Damon Hid In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 In Plain Sight

While Pitt’s cameo was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, it was relatively easy to spot him considering that his appearance wasn’t altered much. On the other hand, Damon’s cameo was incredibly difficult to spot. The actor played Redneck #1, alongside veteran voice ator Alan Tudyk, but was pretty much unrecognizable with the amount of prosthetics he was wearing. Donning a prosthetic nose, a fake beard, and a bodysuit, Damon’s appearance was completely altered for his brief ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 cameo.

Damon decided to hide in plain sight for his ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 appearance, making it a true Easter Egg for sharp-eyed fans to spot.

Though some fans may have been able to identify Damon by his voice, most viewers didn’t even realize who was on their screen. Damon is no stranger to Marvel cameos as he previously appeared as an Asgardian actor portraying Loki in Thor: Ragnarok and Love & Thunder. These cameos were just as fun-natured but much more obvious. Damon decided to hide in plain sight for his ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 appearance, making it a true Easter Egg for sharp-eyed fans to spot.

Matt Damon’s Name Was Changed In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2’s Credits To Make Him Intentionally Hard To Pin Down

Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) with his arms around Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), both men smiling in The Talented Mr Ripley-1

What makes Damon’s cameo virtually impossible for the average viewer to identify is the fact that he isn’t credited under his real name. He’s instead listed under the alias “Dickie Greenleaf” during the end credits, which is a pretty meta reference in itself. Damon starred in the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley, where his character steals the idenтιтy of a wealthy man named Dickie Greenleaf. Damon hasn’t explained why he chose to be credited as such, but taking Dickie as his own name is a great callback to his previous film.

Damon truly disguised himself for his ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 role, from his physical appearance to his credited name. It’s not that his character was particularly hard to spot, but he managed to make himself unrecognizable even to his biggest fans. Damon loves making cameos, not just in Marvel films but in general. Most moviegoers aren’t surprised to see him pop up in unexpected places anymore, but his ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2 cameo feels especially special considering the lengths the actor went to in order to conceal his idenтιтy.
