Paddington In Peru Pᴀsses Major Box Office Milestone After Just 2 Weeks In US Theaters

Paddington in Peru has pᴀssed a major box office milestone in North America. The movie is the latest installment in the franchise based on the iconic children’s books by English author Michael Bond, following the тιтle character and his surrogate human family attempting to rescue his aunt when she goes missing in the jungles of Peru. Although the Paddington in Peru release kicked off in November 2024 in the United Kingdom, it did not hit domestic theaters until Presidents’ Day weekend, where it debuted at No. 2 behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster Captain America: Brave New World.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Paddington in Peru is projected to close out its second weekend in domestic theaters with a 3-day total of $6.5 million. This sees it land at No. 3 behind Captain America at No. 1 and the new horror release The Monkey at No. 2, with a relatively gentle week-on-week drop of 49%. Additionally, its cumulative $25.2 million domestic haul makes it the latest movie to pᴀss the $25 million milestone in North America, one of just seven 2025 domestic releases to have done so at the time of writing.

What This Means For Paddington In Peru

It Is In The Middle Of The Pack So Far

So far, in terms of its domestic box office performance, the new installment has remained in the lower-middle of the three Paddington movies. It is still maintaining a lead over the beloved Paddington 2, which is one of Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed movies with a near-perfect 99% score, but its week 2 drop was much harsher, meaning that it could quickly fall behind its 2018 predecessor. Below, see a breakdown of how all three installments of the franchise have performed at the domestic box office during their first two weekends:

тιтle

Debut

Weekend 2

Drop

Cumulative Total (Weekend 2)

Paddington (2014)

$18.9 million

$12.3 million

-35.3%

$39.9 million

Paddington 2 (2018)

$11 million

$8 million

-27.2%

$24.8 million

Paddington in Peru (2025)

$12.8 million

$6.5 million

-49%

$25.2 million

The cumulative totals are all comparable even though the new movie opened over Presidents’ Day, as both previous installments were also released over 4-day holiday weekends, having come out in January during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day period in the United States. Thus, while it has maintained a lead over Paddington 2, if it continues to drop at its current level, as opposed to the much gentler 27-35% range of the previous movies, it will likely become the lowest-grossing installment yet at the domestic box office by the end of its run.

Our Take On The Paddington In Peru Box Office

The Franchise’s Diminishing Returns Are Natural

Ultimately, this decent but dwindling domestic performance makes sense. While Paddington in Peru reviews are largely positive, having earned the movie a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%, this is the lowest score of the franchise and critics generally agree that it is the worst of the trilogy in spite of its charms. This may be preventing the movie from becoming a word-of-mouth success at the level of the previous installments, even though lingering fondness for the franchise is preventing it from crashing.
