Michael B. Jordan’s I Am Legend 2 Sounds Exciting, But I’m Glad This Other Will Smith 2000s Movie Is Getting A Sequel Too

The announcement of I Am Legend 2 was incredibly exciting for fans of the Will Smith sci-fi movie, yet this isn’t the only Smith film earning a well-deserved sequel, and both should get equal amounts of attention. In 2007, Smith starred in the sci-fi action flick, I Am Legend, based on the 1954 novel of the same name. It follows Robert Neville, a scientist who is one of the few survivors of a man-made plague that turns regular humans into dangerous mutants. As Neville seeks out the last remaining survivors and works on a cure, the mutants edge closer.

The development of I Am Legend 2 is quite a surprise. It has been more than 15 years since the original movie premiered, and though a sequel had been rumored after the film’s success, nothing ever came to fruition. Another big obstacle was the fact that Smith’s character, Neville, is killed at the climax of the film, making a sequel that much harder. Finally, it is a well-known fact that Smith rarely returns for sequels. So, his return to I Am Legend 2, alongside Michael B. Jordan is nothing short of a miracle. Yet, it isn’t the only one.

Hancock Deserves A Sequel, Even If Almost 20 Years Later

Everything We Know About Hancock 2

Another Smith movie that has recently been optioned for a sequel is Hancock. Released just one year after I Am Legend, this movie follows Smith as Hancock, a morally questionable superhero who spends half his time saving Los Angeles from peril and the other half lazing around. However, his laid back atтιтude changes once he saves a PR executive and his beautiful wife, and he realizes that there are some things in this world that he might care about. Despite somewhat mixed critical ratings, Hancock earned $629 million at the box office.

Hancock 2 is not as fully realized as I Am Legend 2, but Smith’s hints at the film are a good sign. In an interview with ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Smith revealed that there were open discussions about making Hancock 2. Though he had few details about the actual plot of the movie, he hinted that Zendaya is being considered for a major role. This is not the first time Hancock 2 has been in development, but hopefully, this iteration will gain more traction and be yet another franchise return for Smith.

Will Smith Doing A Hancock Sequel Is Just As Exciting As I Am Legend 2

Smith Returning To Old Projects Is A Good Thing

Arguably, Hancock 2 is just as exciting as I Am Legend 2. Although Hancock does not have the most positive reviews, the story itself is full of potential in terms of expansion and improvement. On top of that, Hancock is an ideal role for Smith. In the first movie, he proved that he is able to bring just as much silliness to the character as he brings drama to Robert Neville’s character. All in all, Hancock 2 would be a refreshing change for Smith after returning to the dark world of I Am Legend.

In general, returning to old projects seems to be a good move for Smith. In 2024, the actor starred in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and the movie did incredibly well, grossing $400 million. Following this up with even more sequels could bolster Smith’s career. Truthfully, this is the best time for this trend as well, as more and more sequels come to the forefront. Overall, Smith should only benefit from I Am Legend 2 and Hancock 2.
