Following the release of Stephen King’s newest horror movie adaptation, The Monkey, audiences may be eager to watch even more of King’s stories on the big screen, and fortunately, the major streaming services have several great options. Released on February 21, 2025, The Monkey is a horror comedy movie that follows twin brothers who stumble upon a wind-up monkey toy that causes the shocking deaths of several of their family members. 25 years later, the monkey returns and the brothers must finally confront their childhood toy. The movie is based on King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey“.
Despite having just recently premiered, The Monkey is already racking up rave reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a Certified Fresh 80% critics score and an equally strong 76% audience score. It helps that the film has many incredible names behind it. As well as being based on a King short story, The Monkey is directed by Osgood Perkins and stars Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Adam Scott, and Elijah Wood. Ultimately, those who have seen and enjoyed The Monkey should consider checking out these other King horror adaptations for even more terrifying fun.
What Stephen King Movies Are Streaming On Netflix
In The Tall Grᴀss, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, Stand By Me, Gerald’s Game, 1922, It, The Dark Tower
Netflix has the largest catalog of King movie adaptations available to stream. In total, there are seven King films varying in terms of genre, age, and success. The horror entries include In the Tall Grᴀss, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, Gerald’s Game, 1922, and It. Of these, the most popular is probably It, which premiered in 2017. The movie follows a group of children who are terrorized by a killer clown. Another strong candidate is Gerald’s Game. Directed by Netflix legend, Mike Flanagan, this film centers on a woman who accidentally kills her husband during foreplay and remains handcuffed to a bed.
Mike Flanagan is well-known for adapting King stories, including Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck. He is reportedly slated to direct a new adaptation of The Dark Tower.
Though The Monkey fans may be more intrigued by Netflix’s King horror movies, his other films should not be counted out. Stand By Me is an 80’s classic which revolves around a group of young boys who embark on an adventure to find the body of a man who accidentally died near their homes. On the way, they get into trouble and learn more about life and each other. Meanwhile, The Dark Tower is a sci-fi action flick about the intense conflict between a gunslinger and a villain known only as the Man in Black.
What Stephen King Movies Are Streaming On Prime Video
Maximum Overdrive, The Mist, Cell, Hearts in Atlantis
For those seeking lesser-known King adaptations, Prime Video is definitely the way to go. Not only does the service include three underrated King movies, but it also features his directorial debut. Released in 1986, Maximum Overdrive takes place in a world where a radiation storm has caused machines to come to life and attack their makers. A diner cook named Bill becomes the leader of a group of survivors. Notably, Maximum Overdrive was King’s first and only jab at directing a movie (at least thus far), and though it doesn’t have great reviews, it could still be worth checking out.
The other options provided by Prime Video are two horror movies, The Mist and Cell, and a drama called Hearts of Atlantis. The latter stars Anthony Hopkins as a mysterious man who enlists the help of a brilliant young boy to save his life. This has mixed reviews, though many are firmly positive. Ultimately, the ideal King movie to watch from Prime Video is The Mist. This 2007 sci-fi horror sees a New England town overcome by a mysterious mist that holds horrifying creatures and ᴅᴇᴀᴅly consequences.
What Stephen King Movies Are Streaming On Hulu
Children Of The Corn
When it comes to Hulu, there is only one King movie at audiences’ disposal: Children of the Corn. Often considered a classic, Children of the Corn follows a couple driving on a road trip who accidentally hit a young boy. This causes a domino effect of terrifying events, as the couple discover the town is controlled by a cult of children who are not only violent, but eager to kill any adults who cross their path. Though there have been many adaptations of this story, Hulu provides the 2020 version, which tells a slightly varied version of the tale.
In many ways, Children of the Corn seems to be one of the few King stories that has defied having a good adaptation.
Unfortunately, 2020’s Children of the Corn has rather bleak reviews. With an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has been panned as somewhat boring and lacking in scares. On top of that, those who are fans of King’s original story were not thrilled with the film’s attempt at reimagining the tale. However, at the very least, Children of the Corn offers plenty of creepy children and a few strong performances by young actors. In many ways, Children of the Corn seems to be one of the few King stories that has defied having a good adaptation.
What Stephen King Movies Are Streaming On Max
It (1990), It (2017), It Chapter Two, Salem’s Lot
Last but not least, Max offers a strong yet small catalog of King horror films. Most notably, every iteration of King’s novel, It, is available on the platform, ranging from the 1990 film to the modern version and its sequel. Although the 1990 version is quite different in style than the 2017 version, all three movies are definitely worth watching, especially for those who love the King story. It and It Chapter Two are particularly scary watches, as Bill Skarsgård confidently takes on the role of Pennywise. Furthermore, the young cast, including Finn Wolfhard and Jaeden Martell, are absolutely incredible.
The final movie Max offers is Salem’s Lot. Based on King’s second-ever novel, this film is about a man named Ben who returns to his hometown, Jerusalem’s Lot, looking for inspiration for his next book. Yet, he finds something much darker in the form of a vampire who is sucking the life from the town’s inhabitants. Salem’s Lot is far from the best King adaptation, but it still has plenty to offer in terms of star power and scares. All in all, any of these movies would help scratch the itch left by Stephen King’s The Monkey.
