George R. R. Martin Teases Movie Adaptation Of Fantasy Video Game, But His Involvement Is Questionable Due To 1 Reason

While its popularity remains plenty high, particularly after the announcement of its multiplayer spinoff, George R.R. Martin teases that an adaptation of his recent hit video game may get a movie adaptation. Martin is inarguably best known for being the scribe behind the Song of Ice and Fire novels that would later serve as the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones universe of shows. Martin would even have direct involvement on the development of its current ongoing installment, House of the Dragon.

The high fantasy franchise isn’t the only thing Martin has worked on, be it in the literary or screen worlds, having also penned a variety of novels and short stories that have since been adapted to the screen, including the upcoming In the Lost Lands movie led by Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich. Additionally, he has frequently offered brief updates on the long-awaited sixth Ice and Fire novel, The Winds of Winter, the last being in December 2024, when he ᴀssured it was a priority. There is one potential project, however, that may pull his attention away should it move forward.

Martin Says An Elden Ring Movie Is Currently In Talks

His Involvement, However, May Not Be Possible

Despite having explored both the big and small screens, one medium Martin has only briefly explored is that of video games, having executive produced Cyanide’s Game of Thrones adaptation and co-written Elden Ring. The latter тιтle proved to be his biggest venture to date as the author collaborated with FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki for the worldbuilding of the 2022 game, which won various Game of the Year awards and spawned both the DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, and a new spinoff, Nightrein. Much like previous FromSoftware games, however, its future remains unclear beyond this.

During a recent interview for IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin was asked about the chances of a proper sequel to the hit open-world game. Rather than address a follow-up, the author did tease that there are currently talks underway for a potential Elden Ring movie, but noted his involvement will depend on his schedule. See what Martin shared below:

Well, I can’t say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring. We’ll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pᴀss and what the extent of my involvement was, I don’t know. I’m a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.

Our Take On Martin’s Elden Ring Movie Comments

His Lack Of Involvement Won’t Necessarily Be A Bad Thing

Martin’s tease of an Elden Ring movie being in the works is an interesting one, considering the last time any creative involved with the game spoke about the chances of an adaptation was Miyazaki in June 2024, in which he confirmed he was open to the idea of the тιтle being translated to a new medium. He did, however, note then that FromSoftware might not be involved in such an adaptation, as he felt neither he nor the game developer “have the knowledge or ability” to do anything outside of gaming.

Should Martin’s comments be true, and his relationship with Miyazaki strong enough to find a partner together to adapt it, the possibility for Elden Ring to get a movie is certainly wide. That said, the high fantasy genre is one that has largely been minimalized on the big screen due to finances, instead finding a major resurgence on TV as seen by the successes of House of the Dragon, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, among others. Considering talks are likely still early, Martin and Miyazaki may find a studio more interested in television.

The biggest concern, of course, becomes the lack of Martin’s involvement in the movie. The final season of Game of Thrones was memorably panned for getting ahead of the books, and thus a new adaptation of his work without him might prove troublesome. However, given just how ambiguous a fair amount of Elden Ring‘s lore is, and Miyazaki was arguably more involved in the creation of the game than the author, Martin not being on the film wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
