Daisy Ridley’s Die Hard-Inspired Action Movie Debuts With Low Rotten Tomatoes Score

Daisy Ridley‘s Die Hard-inspired action movie debuts with a middling score on Rotten Tomatoes. The actress rose from relative obscurity to superstardom when she was cast as Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy – starring in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker – and is set to reprise her role in the upcoming New Jedi Order movie. However, since 2019’s Rise of Skywalker, Ridley’s career has seen mixed results.

A few of her first roles after Rise of Skywalker were Chaos Walking (21%) and The Marsh King’s Daughter (40%), which were both critical flops that received low Rotten Tomatoes scores. She rebounded with the Sundance drama Sometimes I Think About Dying (82%), delivering an exceptionally melancholic performance, and continued to turn in strong performances in critical hits, Disney’s Young Woman and the Sea (88%) and neo-noir thriller Magpie (83%). However, Ridley’s new action movie doesn’t appear to continue her recent H๏τ streak.

Cleaner Debuts With A Middling Rotten Tomatoes Score

The Action Movie Releases In Theaters This Friday

Cleaner has debuted with a middling Rotten Tomatoes score. Directed by Martin Campbell, best known for the James Bond movies GoldenEye and Casino Royale, the upcoming action thriller features a premise similar to Die Hard, starring Daisy Ridley as an ex-solider turned window cleaner who must rescue hostages, including her brother, when criminal activists take over a gala inside the skyscraper. The cast also includes Clive Owen, Taz Skylar, Ray Fearon, Rufus Jones, Richard Hope, and Lee Boardman.

Now, ahead of its theatrical release this Friday, Cleaner has debuted with a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie only has 24 reviews at the time of writing, so the score is subject to change as more are published. It doesn’t yet have an audience score, though it will start to take shape once it releases in theaters.

What Cleaner’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For Daisy Ridley

It Ends Her Recent H๏τ Streak

Though Daisy Ridley’s post-Star Wars career started off shaky with Chaos Walking and The Marsh King’s Daughter, she rebounded with Sometimes I Think About Dying, Young Woman and the Sea, and Magpie. Based on its Rotten Tomatoes score, it appears Cleaner will be closer to those first two projects rather than the latter three that revived her career.

Cleaner reviews are calling it a serviceable but unremarkable action thriller, which doesn’t appear to be Ridley’s fault, who turns in another strong lead performance. Cleaner‘s biggest problems seem to be a generic script, lackluster stakes, and uneven execution. In turn, Cleaner shouldn’t derail Daisy Ridley‘s career, especially with intriguing projects like the survival thriller We Bury the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and another collaboration with Campbell, Dedication, lined up for the future.

Cleaner releases in theaters on February 21.
