Wicked Streaming Release Date Revealed

The streaming release date for Wicked has finally been announced. The 2024 movie adapts the first act of the Broadway musical of the same name, telling the origin story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), the future Wicked With of the West from The Wizard of Oz, and her friendship with Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera). After the movie premiered in theaters in November 2024, the Wicked box office smashed records, becoming the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time by grossing more than $725 million worldwide.

The NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock has now officially announced that Wicked will begin streaming on the platform on March 21. This date will mark almost four full months after the movie debuted in theaters, and just under three weeks after the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, during which the movie could potentially win several Oscars, having been nominated for 10, including Best Picture. The movie’s sing-along version will also be available on Peacock, along with the “Defying Gravity” Collection of bonus content, which is listed below:

What This Means For Wicked

Its Streaming Release Is Perfectly Timed

This streaming release date seems to be perfectly placed to keep Wicked mania running through the release of the upcoming Wicked: For Good. The sequel, which adapts the second and final act of the stage musical, was sH๏τ at the same time as the 2024 movie and is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025. By timing the movie’s streaming availability shortly after the Oscars, during which it seems likely to pick up at least one award, it will likely offer the original another month or so of buzz as the promotional campaign for the sequel ramps up.

Wicked: For Good will feature the return of Erivo and Grande-Butera, as well as many of their co-stars, including Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

However, one potential hurdle is the fact that this streaming premiere comes on the same day that Disney’s live-action Snow White remake debuts in theaters. Both movies are courting similar audiences that have nostalgia for classic children’s cinema. However, early projections show that the Rachel Zegler-led movie may not debut with more than $70 million at the domestic box office, compared to the 2024 movie’s $112.5 million opening weekend. That, in addition to its Oscar nominations and critics’ Wicked reviews earning it a Certified Fresh 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, could still make the streaming release a strong contender that weekend.

Our Take On The Wicked Streaming Release Date

The Wicked: For Good Trailer Could Be On Its Way

Elphaba crying at the Ozdust in Wicked Part One

The streaming release for Wicked marks the final stop for the movie after its theatrical debut, its video on demand premiere on December 31, 2024, and its 2024-2025 awards season run. It seems likely that Universal will seek to strike when the iron is still H๏τ, premiering the long-awaited trailer for Wicked: For Good some time in March in order to capitalize on this last boost for the popular musical.

While it was rumored that the trailer for the Wicked sequel would debut during the Super Bowl, that did not come to fruition. This was potentially the case because of an effort to avoid distracting from the Oscar conversation, as Academy voting had not yet been completed. However, given the way that the month will essentially be bookended with the Oscars and this streaming release, March is now the perfect time for the trailer to finally debut.
