First-Look Images Reveal Nicole Kidman’s “Twisted” New Thriller From The Director Of 2022’s Fresh

Nicole Kidman’s unraveling teacher is revealed in first-look images from the “twisted” new thriller by the director of the horror movie Fresh. The Oscar-winner is currently garnering strong reviews for her performance in the erotic comedy-thriller Babygirl, and Kidman will seemingly remain in the dark-but-funny slot with her next release, the Prime Video movie Holland. Directed by Mimi Cave and about to be premiered at SXSW ahead of a March 27 streaming release, the movie also stars Gael Garcia Bernal, Matthew Macfadyen and Jude Hill.

With its release date fast approaching, Kidman’s latest starring vehicle just unveiled a quartet of first-look images (via People) showcasing the four lead Holland actors.

One sH๏τ shows a mustache-wearing Bernal behind the driver’s seat of a car, giving someone a shady look, with a blurry Kidman knocking on the window behind him. In the next image, Macfadyen and Hill adorably work together on a model train-set. Kidman is then seen in a pair of solo images, one showing her looking a little battered, staring over her car seat with alarm, the other placing her in a domestic setting, glaring downward with a hint of menace at someone or something.

What The New Images Mean For Holland

Kidman And Company Experience A Twisted Tale

Cave’s 2022 film Fresh established the director as someone with a darkly skewed perspective on the world, who is adept at juggling comedy and horror. Her latest seems it will lean more into comedy, after she told PeopleThere’s an odd sort of offbeat humor about [Holland] that we’re hoping people get and enjoy.” She also praised Kidman’s comedic timing, mentioning the star’s 1995 film To Die For as an inspiration for her Holland performance.

Kidman looks a little bit more scary than funny in her first-look images above. One sees her in her character’s homemaker role, but there’s no sense of domestic bliss, given her slightly menacing expression. Things seem to be unraveling in her second image, which sees her face bloodied, and her expression gone downright wild, as she and Bernal drive somewhere together.

Bernal himself seems a bit sketchy, which makes sense as his character is described as a friend of Kidman’s, who joins her to “become suspicious of a secret, only to discover nothing in their lives is what it seems.” Kidman’s character is described as “meticulous,” but the film’s synopsis teases that her “picture-perfect life with her community pillar husband and son in tulip-filled Holland, Michigan” soon takes a turn. Macfadyen and Hill play the father-and-son, who can be seen above in what appears to be a happy moment, possibly from before things start getting twisted.

Kidman Continues To Take Challenging Roles

Cave went to some pretty dark places with Fresh, and looks like she’s set to probe some heavy territory again in Holland. Kidman is herself no stranger to bleak tales, and is always eager to take roles that allow her to explore the blackest recesses of the human experience. Her work with Cave seemingly allowed Kidman to show off her comedic chops too, as the Fresh director seeks to once again blend the horrifying with the hilarious.
