“Spielberg Played A Big Joke On Him”: Steven Spielberg Pranked Harrison Ford During His Goonies Set Visit, And He Made Sure Every Crew Member Was In On It

Steven Spielberg pranked Harrison Ford and involved the whole crew when he visited the set of The Goonies. Based on a story by Spielberg, who also produced via his Amblin Entertainment banner, the 1985 adventure film follows the тιтular group of kids who attempt to save their homes from foreclosure by finding a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure. The Goonies cast includes Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Ke Huy Quan.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Ke Huy Quan remembered the time that Harrison Ford visited the set of The Goonies and Steven Spielberg played a prank on him. At the time, there was a biography out of Ford that he “really hated,” so Spielberg purchased around 300 copies of the book so that when Ford arrived on set, everyone would be reading it. Read how Quan told the full story below:

I was star-struck when Harrison Ford came to visit because I’d made Indy [Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom]. Spielberg played a big joke on him. There was a biography out of him that he really hated, so Steven went out and bought about 300 copies, so that when Harrison came to visit and walked on to set, the security guard, the gaffers, the camera equipment people, everybody was reading that biography.

Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan starred alongside each other in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, directed by Spielberg.

What Steven Spielberg Pranking Harrison Ford Means For Their Relationship

It Illustrates The Friendship They Share

Steven Spielberg pranking Harrison Ford when he visited the set of The Goonies perfectly illustrates the playful friendship the two share. Of course, Spielberg directed Ford on four Indiana Jones movies – Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Though their collaboration on the franchise was built on pure professionalism, Spielberg and Ford have always maintained a lighthearted camaraderie both on and off those sets.

Other celebrities – such as Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, and Clint Eastwood – also visited the set of The Goonies during filming, but Spielberg only felt compelled to prank Ford. The actor is known for being an introvert who doesn’t exactly enjoy attention, so Spielberg’s prank shows that he knows how to push his ʙuттons in good fun. This wasn’t the only time they shared such moments. While filming Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ford and Sean Connery famously pranked Spielberg by not wearing pants to beat the heat during a scene set inside a small plane.
