“I’m Not Allowed To Announce It, But…”: Next Peaky Blinders Project After New Movie Gets Sneaky Tease From Franchise Creator

Peaky Blinders

creator Steven Knight shares a sneaky tease regarding a new project in the franchise following the upcoming movie. After first airing in 2013, the hit British crime drama series starring Cillian Murphy as crime gang leader Tommy Shelby came to an end with season 6 in 2022. Now, a Peaky Blinders movie is confirmed to be on the way with Tom Harper directing, Knight writing, and Murphy, alongside other original cast members, returning for a new Shelby story set during World War II.

During a recent appearance on the BBC Breakfast show (via Variety), Knight provides an update on the Peaky Blinders movie, confirming that filming wrapped on December 13. He teases that what he’s seeing in the editing room as the film remains in post-production has been impressive, but he also reveals that the film is not the last audiences will see of the world of Peaky Blinders. Knight remains тιԍнт-lipped about what this new mystery project is, however, beyond confirming that something is in the works. Check out his comment below:

“We’re putting [the movie] together now. I would say this, wouldn’t I? But it’s fantastic. We’ve got the best, I think, the best British actors all in one place, including Stephen [Graham]. The stuff that I’m watching – the rushes, the ᴀssemblies – no one will be disappointed. It is quite an incredible thing. It’s a very fitting way to end this part of the ‘Peaky’ story. This part, yes. I’m not allowed to announce it, but I’m just saying that the world of ‘Peaky’ will continue.”

What Knight’s Update Means For The Peaky Blinders Franchise

How Many New Projects Are Reportedly In Development

One major question facing this new mystery project is whether it will feature any returning Peaky Blinders cast members. The upcoming film seems like it is being positioned as a farewell for Murphy’s Tommy, but it hasn’t yet been confirmed that it will serve as the last time audiences see the character. It’s entirely possible that the mystery project will continue Tommy’s story beyond the film, but it seems more likely that it will focus on a new character.

If the new project does focus on a new character, the upcoming movie is set to introduce several. The cast for the film includes Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, any of whom could take center stage in a new movie or TV show. Though Knight doesn’t specify, the mystery project he teases is seemingly separate from the reported Boston-set Peaky Blinders spinoff and the Polly prequel show. This could mean that, after the movie, three new тιтles in the franchise are still to come.

In addition to Graham, the Peaky Blinders movie reportedly features the return of original show stars Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Ian Peck, and Packy Lee.

Our Take On The New Peaky Blinders Project

Can The Franchise Succeed Without Tommy Shelby?

Though three new Peaky Blinders spinoffs or continuations is a lot, if Knight is involved in all of them, they’re seemingly in good hands. Knight, after all, was crucial to the show’s success. Though he doesn’t direct the upcoming film, if that ends up being a hit, it will be further proof that the franchise can succeed beyond the six-seasons of the original show.

One major test for the franchise will be how much audience interest there is in a story that doesn’t involve Murphy’s Tommy. He was the focal point of the show and he will be again for the film, but that could mark the end for that character. The Peaky Blinders movie is evidently the main focus for Knight at the moment, but it seems like a more concrete announcement about the franchise’s future could arrive over the coming months.
