Mark Wahlberg & Mel Gibson’s New Action Movie Unlocks Another Major Box Office Milestone After Less Than A Month In Theaters

Flight Risk, the new Mark Wahlberg movie, directed by Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson, has pᴀssed another box office milestone, after just one month in theaters. The movie marks Gibson’s first directorial effort since 2016’s Academy Award-winning war epic Hacksaw Ridge, and is his sixth film as a director. The story follows a pilot transporting an air marshall and a fugitive across the Alaskan wilderness, where the idenтιтies of those on board are not all as they appear. The movie released in North America on January 24, and continued Wahlberg’s poor Rotten Tomatoes movie streak.

Per Box Office Mojo, the movie has just moved past $40 million worldwide, with $28,032,263 domestic and $12,257,135 international, taking the total to date to $40,289,398 at the global box office. This places it at #5 on the current 2025 Worldwide Box Office ranking, below One of Them Days, Den of Thieves: Pantera, Dog Man, and Captain America: Brave New World. With the $40 million threshold now pᴀssed, the movie will have its sights set on toppling One of Them Days‘ $44.04 million total, to claim the #4 spot.

What This Means For Flight Risk’s Box Office Prospects

The Movie Should Reach The End Of Its Disappointing Run Soon

It is unclear how much longer Flight Risk is going to continue its theatrical run, but it is unlikely to be for much longer. The movie has been critically mauled, and, with a production budget of $25 million, is also considered a financial disappointment. Flight Risk‘s talented cast, which includes Wahlberg, Topher Grace, and Michelle Dockery, coupled with a director as accomplished as Gibson, would have seen high expectations for the movie. Furthermore, Lionsgate spent reportedly $20 million marketing the film, which will only have compounded the movie’s disappointing run.

While Flight Risk will go down as the worst film Gibson has directed, it might also be considered one of Wahlberg’s weakest efforts too, and everyone involved will want to bounce back with their next efforts.

While a $40 million milestone is not to be scoffed at, there will have been hopes the movie would have pᴀssed this much earlier in its run, and the negative critical reviews surrounding the project, coupled with Gibson cutting a controversial figure, and Wahlberg in a rare villain role could all have been factors impacting the success of the project. The movie has been out for around three weeks now, and box office takings are going to slow down, and, with the movie only stumbling to a disappointing $1.5 million over the weekend, the end could be in sight.

Our Verdict On Flight Risk’s Box Office Performance

The Movie Has Failed Both Commercially & Critically

Several factors could have contributed to the movie’s underwhelming reviews and box office run. The fact that Lionsgate chose to delay Flight Risk from an October 2024 release to a January 2025 release could have contributed to this, and the fact that Gibson is a controversial name in Hollywood may have caused some people to avoid the movie too.

While Flight Risk will go down as the worst film Gibson has directed, it might also be considered one of Wahlberg’s weakest efforts too, and everyone involved will want to bounce back with their next efforts.
