The horror genre has been one of the few consistent staples of the film industry over the last few years, with tons of great ones released recently, including The Monkey. The film is adapted from the Stephen King short story of the same name, which in itself is already a big selling point for fans of the genre. The star-studded cast of The Monkey has led to great reviews so far, but the question remains of what King himself thinks of the new film, and whether he believes it to be a worthy adaptation of his story.
Stephen King has a very long body of work, which includes some of the most iconic horror stories of all time, and a pretty significant number of them have been adapted into feature films. Some have been more successful than others, with last year’s Salem’s Lot remake being an example of a film that didn’t hit very well with any audiences. Thankfully, The Monkey‘s great early reviews show that the film is shaping up to be one of the better Stephen King adaptations.
Stephen King Gave The Monkey Movie A Glowing Review: What He Said
The Monkey Has Lived Up To His Expectations
The veteran author did share his thoughts on the newest adaptation of his work, revealing that King really enjoyed what he saw in The Monkey, and seemed to think it was on par with his original story. He posted his thoughts on his Threads account, saying that it was “batsнιт insane,” clarifying that he “[said] that with admiration.” While his thoughts aren’t necessarily more important to know than other reviewers before watching The Monkey, it is very comforting to hear that the original creator thinks that the film lives up to what he wrote in 1980.

As so many of Stephen King’s works have been adapted into film, his thoughts on those films have been extremely varied over the many years of his career. The first movie based on his work was Carrie in 1976, which also happened to be his first published novel. He is a big fan of its film, for good reason, which likely contributed to the fact that so much of his work has been adapted. Some of King’s other favorite adaptations include The Shawshank Redemption, the recent IT films, 1408, and Misery.

Famously, out of all of his work, King isn’t a big fan of one of the most iconic film adaptations, that being Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. It is worth mentioning that his opinions on the movie have softened in recent years with the release of Doctor Sleep in 2019. While there are other films based on his stories that he dislikes, like Firestarter, The Running Man, and The Lawnmower Man, he generally seems to enjoy seeing his projects on the big screen, and The Monkey is definitely following that trend.
