Apple TV+’s New Sci-Fi Horror Movie Cleverly Flips Sigourney Weaver’s Most Popular Movie Character

Includes SPOILERS for The Gorge!

Sigourney Weaver plays a prominent role in Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi horror movie, The Gorge, and it subverts audiences’ expectations for the actress. Sigourney Weaver has been acting in movies and TV shows for over five decades and is the recipient of four Emmy nominations, three Oscar nominations, two Golden Globe awards, and more. That’s not to mention her incredible box office success in franchises like Avatar, Alien, Ghostbusters, and more, making her an exciting addition to The Gorge’s cast.

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy lead the film as elite snipers sent to stand guard at a mysterious location, protecting the outside world from the monsters crawling out of it. Building toward The Gorge’s ending, it’s revealed that the organization that hired their characters has been running a top-secret operation to build super soldiers and has been killing their mercenaries to keep the information classified. Behind this scheme is Bartholomew, played by Weaver, and a corporation called Dark Lake.

Sigourney Weaver’s Character In The Gorge Is The Opposite Of Alien’s Ripley

It’s Like Ellen Ripley Managing Weyland-Yutani Corp.

Beyond just box office success and awards, Sigourney Weaver stands out as one of the biggest game changers in the world of movies. Her role as Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s Alien was one of the defining performances in cinematic history, paving the way for dozens of action heroines to follow her. Without Ripley, there might not be Princess Leia, Sarah Connor, or Furiosa in the same way that audiences know them today. That makes Weaver all the more fun as the villainous Bartholomew.

Bartholomew is the head of a sinister company doing dangerous research on mutated organisms, and she’s willing to kill people to keep everything hidden.

Bartholomew is the head of a sinister company doing dangerous research on mutated organisms, and she’s willing to kill people to keep everything hidden. That’s the total opposite of Ripley, the rebellious do-gooder hero of the Alien movies who exists in a world of danger caused by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Oddly enough, Bartholomew seems a lot like someone who would be behind the scenes at Weyland-Yutani.

Sigourney Weaver Playing A Villain In A Sci-Fi Horror Movie Is A Fun Twist For The Gorge

It’s not an enormous twist that Bartholomew is the villain in The Gorge. Dark Lake is revealed to be an antagonist fairly early. Still, it adds a layer of trust to the mission at the beginning of the film when Sigourney Weaver is the one offering it. Having her in their role allows for a clever moment of subversion, and it’s fun to see one of the great cinema heroes get to be a villain. Sigourney Weaver is fantastic in the movie, showing her acting chops as an evil character, which she’s only done in a few projects like The Defenders.
