Julia Roberts’ Upcoming Crime Thriller Is A Perfect Chance To Redeem Her Disappointing 2015 Movie With 39% On Rotten Tomatoes

The future has much in store for Julia Roberts, including redemption for her 2015 thriller that received bad reviews and wasn’t exactly a knockout at the box office. Roberts’ career began in the 1980s, and she quickly ensured everyone knew her name. By 1990, Roberts was an Academy Award-nominated actress with a growing reputation as a leading lady. Then, after another Oscar nod for Pretty Woman, she won the Best Actress award for her performance in Erin Brockovich in 2001. More than two decades later, Roberts continues to be a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood (despite her flops).

In the past couple of years, Roberts has largely focused on thriller films. She starred in one of the most-watched Netflix movies of all time (the 2023 apocalyptic psychological thriller Leave the World Behind) and led the cast of the critically acclaimed Starz political thriller series Gaslit. Now, Roberts will appear in a new movie that can make up for her unfortunate contribution to the thriller genre in 2015.

Julia Roberts’ Secret In Their Eyes Was A Disappointing Dive Into The Crime Thriller Genre

Secret In Their Eyes Has A 39% RT Score

Julia Roberts starred as Jess Cob in Secrets in Their Eyes, the 2015 remake of the 2009 Argentine film of the same name. Unfortunately, the American version of the thriller couldn’t live up to the original. Secrets in Their Eyes received mixed reviews, many of which knocked the movie for failing its talented cast, including Roberts. Some critics were also confused as to why the story needed a remake, especially one that was inferior to the original.

Secret in Their Eyes holds a 39 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes (and its Popcornmeter score isn’t much better — 41 percent). The 2015 film doesn’t accurately represent what Roberts can bring to the thriller genre, though. Thankfully, the actress has a chance to redeem herself with her upcoming project.

Julia Roberts’ Kill Your Darlings Already Sounds More Exciting Than Secret In Their Eyes

The New Thriller Is Based On A Book

Julia Roberts’ upcoming thriller movie Kill Your Darlings sounds intriguing and is the perfect opportunity for redemption. The actress has signed on to star in the murder mystery, based on Peter Swanson’s forthcoming book of the same name (per The Hollywood Reporter). Kill Your Darling revolves around a couple with a dark secret that has plagued them for decades. Per the novel’s synopsis, their marriage is “defined by a single terrible act they plotted together many years ago.” The story will also be told in reverse. Given everything known about Kill Your Darlings, Julia Roberts might have a hit on her hands.
