Heretic Streaming Release Date Revealed After Hugh Grant’s Horror Hit Raked In $50M+ At The Box Office

Heretic now has an official streaming release date. The A24 horror movie, which was written and directed by A Quiet Place‘s Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, stars Hugh Grant as a seemingly wholesome man whose sinister side is revealed when he traps a pair of Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) in his home to have an increasingly heated debate about religion. The movie was a critical and commercial success, with Heretic reviews earning it a Certified Fresh 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes and its worldwide box office of $59.5 million more than exceeding its slim $10 million budget.

A24 has announced that Heretic is set to stream exclusively on Max as of March 7. The movie will also debut on HBO linear the following day, March 8, at 8:00 p.m. ET. This streaming release date comes almost exactly four months after the movie’s wide release theatrical premiere on November 8, 2024, and three months after it debuted on video on demand platforms on December 10.

What This Means For Heretic

It Could Be Well Served By Its Streaming Release Date

This streaming release date could be quite well-timed for the A24 horror movie. For one thing, it comes the Friday after the 97th Academy Awards. While it was not nominated for any Oscars, it has been featured in multiple other ceremonies throughout the 2024-2025 awards season, including being nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award. Thus, the movie notably being snubbed by the Oscars could still be a major topic of conversation that week, potentially helping it connect with a broader audience when it arrives on Max.

Hugh Grant is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 2025 BAFTAs, which will take place on February 16.

In addition to the Heretic cast receiving awards nods, another major factor that could make this release date perfect is the fact that there is a dearth of major wide release horror movies set to run in theaters in March. The only major new release horror тιтle is The Woman in the Yard, which is due on March 28. This gives Heretic a lot of runway with which to capture the horror audience, especially considering the fact that it will debut two weeks after the final major horror release of February, which is Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey.

Our Take On The Heretic Streaming Release Date

Word Of Mouth Could Propel It

Even though Heretic has nothing left to prove after its stellar theatrical run, its audience could continue to grow after it hits streaming. Despite its divisive subject matter, it has appealed to general audiences, as evidenced by its Rotten Tomatoes user score, which is a solidly Fresh 76%. This word of mouth is likely what led it to be a box office success in the first place, and its approaching at-home availability could see its buzz begin to pick up again in the same way.
