M3GAN 2.0: Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know

M3GAN 2.0 seemed like a sure thing after the success of the first film, and now updates are pouring in about the anticipated horror sequel. The film, directed by Gerard Johnstone, follows an artificially intelligent doll who becomes self-aware and acts hostile toward anyone who threatens her. With an eye towards contemporary issues, M3GAN brought the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor to compliment its genuinely creepy premise.

M3GAN received high praise from critics, and it became a phenomenal hit, with many clips going viral on TikTok. The movie made $176 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), which is even more impressive given its low budget of $12 million. Not only was the film a hit, but the character of M3GAN has the opportunity to blossom into the next great horror icon. The box office success of M3GAN all but confirmed a sequel would happen, and now it’s official, as M3GAN 2.0 updates have revealed returning characters, the sequel’s тιтle, and a release date.

A Teaser Trailer Is Revealed

A few days before its big debut during the 2025 Super Bowl, the latest news confirms the release of the first teaser for M3GAN 2.0. The tongue-in-cheek teaser is set to Chappell Roan’s hit song “Femininomenon”, and features M3GAN dancing her viral dance while back-lit on a purple set. As the camera pulls in closer, M3GAN’s face is revealed, and she winks to the audience. Though the teaser gives away nothing about the movie, it does imply that the sequel will lean into the first movie’s viral success.

A spinoff, SOULM8TE, is also coming soon.

Universal also released a slew of important story details about the sequel, and the synopsis can be found below:

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno; Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.

With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I b***h is about to meet her match.

M3GAN 2.0 Release Date

The Film Will Now Arrive In June 2025

the latest release date shift isn’t likely due to production issues, but instead an intentional move to give M3GAN 2.0 the best chance at the box office.

Though it was initially slated to release in January 2025, the anticipated horror sequel was moved to May 16th, 2025 before finally settling on June 27, 2025 as its official release date. The film had previously been affected by the Hollywood strikes of 2023, but it seemed certain to keep its original release plan. However, the latest release date shift isn’t likely due to production issues, but instead an intentional move to give M3GAN 2.0 the best chance at the box office.

The WGA strike was resolved on September 27th, 2023.

A New AI Threat Arrives In M3GAN 2.0

M3GAN looking extremely damaged in M3GAN

With the AI doll’s body destroyed at the end of M3GAN, M3GAN’s return means she’ll need a new form in the sequel. Though the follow-up was shrouded in mystery for a long time, Universal has finally revealed the basic plot details for M3GAN 2.0. As expected, the sequel will catch up with Cady and Gemma in the years following their harrowing AI ordeal. Gemma has pivoted to become a major advocate for legislation to control the spread of AI, while Cady has turned into a typically rebellious 14-year-old.

This forces Gemma to resurrect M3GAN (with necessary modifications, of course) in order to do battle with her new AI counterpart.

Unfortunately, the tech behind the original M3GAN has been stolen and used to create a new military weapon known as Amelia, that is capable of mᴀss slaughter. Unsurprisingly, Amelia gets tired of following orders and begins to turn on her masters. This forces Gemma to resurrect M3GAN (with necessary modifications, of course) in order to do battle with her new AI counterpart. Taking things to absurd new heights, M3GAN 2.0 won’t be pulling any punches and is clearly leaning into the franchise’s meme-worthy moments.
