A new trailer for A Minecraft Movie shows Jason Momoa being nearly blown up by a creeper. Based on the 2011 video game Minecraft, the Jared Hess-directed movie has an all-star cast, featuring Jack Black as Steve, Momoa as Garett, and Emma Myers as Natalie, among others. The action comedy is set to be released on April 4.
Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a new trailer of A Minecraft Movie ahead of NBA All-Star Weekend, when it will air on TV. The 60-second preview takes a closer look at the Overworld, a cubic wonderland full of possibilities, teasing an action-packed adventure. However, as a world that thrives on imagination and building blocks, it may not be as safe as it seems. The video sees the main gang being chased, hunted, and trapped in a maze while Garett is almost blown up in a creeper explosion. Check out the trailer below:
What The New Trailer Means For A Minecraft Movie
It Offers An In-Depth Look At The CGI Component
While the first Minecraft Movie official trailer focused on the four misfits’ discovery of the Overworld, the new 60-second spot unpacks the magic of the cubic world, teasing a game of survival as the characters embark on a journey. The movie’s first trailer was faced with heavy criticism back when it was dropped in September 2024. Hess has since addressed the backlash against the live-action elements.
The new trailer largely focuses on world-building and visual effects, which seems to have addressed the lack of imagination in the first trailer. Not only does the new preview feature more CGI characters, but it also teases the potential challenges the characters will face during their stay in the Overworld. Additionally, the new teaser seems to address the movie’s close ties to the Minecraft video game by positioning the main gang as players within the game’s environment.
Our Take On A Minecraft Movie
A Minecraft Movie Puts Viewers In Players’ Mode
The trailers prove that the story in A Minecraft Movie already separates itself from other video game movie adaptations. Both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog series focus on storylines that could exist within the games themselves involving game characters, but it seems that the upcoming Jack Black-led movie is focused on the player’s perspective, which will be refreshing to see.
The trailer also seems to tease a learning curve story arc, where the main characters are air-dropped into an unfamiliar world where they have to figure out what to do while trying to survive. It sounds like A Minecraft Movie might be more like The Super Mario Bros. Movie meets Yellowjackets than what fans would normally expect to see in a video game movie, which could make it a very exciting addition to the genre.
