Now, Universal Pictures has released the latest trailer for How to Train Your Dragon. What This Trailer Means For How To Train Your Dragon
Astrid Has A Bigger Role
The latest How to Train Your Dragon trailer hints at how Astrid’s role will be extended in the live-action film. Director Dean DeBlois spoke about this in a recent interview with ScreenRant. In making a new adaptation, he noted that Astrid was “pretty thin” as a character in the first movie. As such, they wanted to further explore Astrid’s motivations and why she is so “acrimonious” to Hiccup at the beginning. Hints of this backstory are witnessed in the trailer, and DeBlois’ explanation is found below:
“Astrid was one of those situations where in the first movie, it felt like she was pretty thin but she had potentially more [depth]. This was a chance to kind of just get in there, to better understand why she’s got such an acrimonious relationship with Hiccup in the beginning. She’s worked really hard for the attention that she gets. […] In her mind, she’s going to be chief one day. She’s been really focused and working hard to get there, and she has to give up a lot to fall from grace with Hiccup. It excited me in that way. It’s a better character to watch.”
As such, this full glimpse at the live-action film is less of a sH๏τ-for-sH๏τ recreation than the previous How to Train Your Dragon trailer. There are still moments wherein Hiccup and CGI Toothless reconstruct exact scenes from the original, but there are also lines and moments that do not seem lifted directly from the animated counterpart. Astrid’s sequences are a prime example and show that DeBlois and his team are not merely making an exact copy of the 2010 film with live-action actors.
