Danny Ramirez first played Joaquin Torres in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and will reprise his Marvel Cinematic Universe role in a larger capacity in Captain America: Brave New World, although the new Falcon was not the actor’s first Marvel role. While many actors have played multiple superhero roles, including a few like Gemma Chan who have played multiple roles in the MCU, this is still rare. Following this, it makes sense that Ramirez felt the need to hide his Marvel past while trying out for the Joaquin Torres role.
ScreenRant‘s own Liam Crowley recently spoke with Ramirez about Captain America: Brave New World, where the actor reflected on the time he spent on the Fox Marvel series The Gifted. The actor played a recurring role in the Fox Marvel series, which centered around mutants needing to hide from the authorities. Ramirez played the character Wes, a role he decided would be best not brought up during his auditions for the new Falcon role.
But for the first audition, actually, I only auditioned one round and they gave me fake dummy sides. And I was like, ‘Well, I hope no one knows that I’ve already done a Marvel thing prior.’ So I was on The Gifted and I told my team, I’m like, ‘Let’s not say anything until after, just in case they ask.’ And so I went, I auditioned, I did these three scenes and I had prepared 10 different ways to do the scene. And so I show up early and I do my version of it and they’re like, ‘Well, we got time to kill. Do you have any more versions of it?’ I’m like, ‘You asked the wrong person. I got many.’ And so we went and for the next 10 minutes I did the other versions, and three days later they called me and just like that, it was like a bucket of cold water.
The casting for the role was a whirlwind, but the actor revealed that the character’s trajectory was planned from the outset. While the character would not don the Falcon wings in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ramirez said that he was told about the role’s future right away: “I knew when they called. There was a code name for the role,” he said. From there, it seemed that the actor’s Marvel future was immediately destined to be much bigger than Ramirez had expected during his audition.
It happened so fast, it was so unexpected. It was like 10 days after I wrapped up [Top Gun:] Maverick. And so it was a back-to-back thing that I was like, wait. Then they called me and they’re like, ‘This is who he’s going to be. He’s going to be Falcon.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And it felt like a weird thing of having just flown my last F-18 flight landing, flying to LA with Tom Cruise and Tarzan, Greg Tarzan Davis, and then trying to settle into what I thought the rest of my life was going to be like. And then getting that call to take to the skies again was just insane.

The Actor Is Clearly Very Excited About The Role
Several actors in the MCU have played multiple roles, and Ramirez appearing in The Gifted would not likely have disqualified him from consideration, although it makes sense that the actor was careful about it. Casting in Marvel roles has been a big deal and has quickly turned actors like Chris Hemsworth and Simu Liu into household names. Fox’s X-Men actors appearing in the MCU has also been a common occurrence. However, The Gifted was set in another timeline, making the actor’s recast no major issue.
What is most exciting from these comments is seeing the enthusiasm that Ramirez clearly has for the character and for his role in the MCU. Having a recent history of big, flight-based roles with his appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, the actor’s career trajectory appears to be upward. While Falcon’s future in the MCU remains to be seen, the actor appears dedicated to his role in a way that seems exciting and hopeful. This excitement will hopefully translate to the screen in Captain America: Brave New World.

Seeing Ramirez open up about the audition process for his role is illuminating, as it gives some insight into how Marvel approaches casting some of these bigger characters. It is good to see that recasting across universes does not appear to be a big deal to Marvel, and that the franchise is generally looking for the best fit for the role, no matter their previous casting. The actor expressed a great deal of palpable excitement in his interview, and I hope this pᴀssion will be felt onscreen in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
