How The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep Movie Connects To The Netflix Show

The animated movie The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is the latest expansion of Netflix’s The Witcher, and it has a strong connection to the show. The world of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher is very extensive and rich, and as it continues to expand with novels and video games, so it does over at Netflix. The Witcher debuted on the streaming platform in 2019 to great success, quickly becoming one of its most popular тιтles. Despite facing a lot of controversy during its second season, The Witcher is now preparing for its fourth season.

Meanwhile, the universe of Netflix’s The Witcher will expand with a new animated movie, in the style of the 2021 animated movie Nightmare of the Wolf. Directed by Kang Hei Chul, Sirens of the Deep will follow Geralt (voiced by Doug Cockle) on an adventure involving underwater kingdoms, merpeople, and a war, accompanied by Jaskier (Joey Batey) and new allies. Sirens of the Deep is now streaming on Netflix, and despite some big Witcher characters missing, it is directly connected to the main series, though in a slightly tricky way.

The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep Takes Place In The Same Continuity As The Show

Sirens Of The Deep & The Witcher Are Part Of The Same Universe

As Sirens of the Deep stars Geralt and Jaskier but doesn’t include Ciri in any capacity, it raises many questions about its place in the timeline and the universe of Netflix’s The Witcher. However, and like the rest of the expansions of this world, Sirens of the Deep is set in the same continuity as the main show. The Witcher’s main focus is not just Geralt’s story and journey, but also those of Ciri (Freya Allan) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), as well as their story together as a family.

Sirens of the Deep shows Geralt as a monster hunter but also as one of the most empathetic and centered people on the Continent.

While this has taken Geralt on different adventures and made him face a variety of enemies – from monsters like kikimoras to mages like Vilgefortz – since he found Ciri, his adventures have been mostly centered on her. Sirens of the Deep offers a look at another chapter in Geralt’s journey that the main show didn’t have time to include, showing more of Geralt as a monster hunter but also as one of the most empathetic and centered people on the Continent.

In addition to that, Sirens of the Deep adds to Geralt’s complicated love life, giving another look at how he has dealt with his feelings for Yennefer. Basically, Sirens of the Deep is a complement to The Witcher, filling some gaps left by the main show while also expanding Geralt’s story.

Which The Witcher Story Netflix’s Sirens Of The Deep Movie Is Based On

Sirens Of The Deep Isn’t An Original Story

Despite what it might seem, Sirens of the Deep isn’t an original story, and it does come from one of Sapkowski’s The Witcher stories. Sirens of the Deep is based on the short story “A Little Sacrifice”, from the short story collection Sword of Destiny. In it, Geralt meets Duke Agloval, who hires him as a translator between him and his lover, the mermaid Sh’eenaz. When Agloval’s proposal goes wrong, Agloval gives Geralt a new job when a pearl-diving boat is found alone in the ocean without a trace of the crew and with blood on the deck.

Agloval believes it to be the work of a sea monster, but Geralt, Jaskier, and Jaskier’s friend Essi Daven (also known as “Little Eye”) make an important discovery underwater. Although other short stories have been used as inspiration in Netflix’s The Witcher, Sirens of the Deep is the first time a short story gets more than one episode. Thanks to this story, Sirens of the Deep sees Geralt doing what he does best: slay monsters and serve as the empathetic voice of wisdom between humans and other creatures, something that the main show has left behind in recent seasons.

Where The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep Takes Place In The Timeline

Sirens Of The Deep Is Part Of The Witcher Season 1

If Sirens of the Deep is set in the same world and timeline as the main Witcher TV show, the next big question is when exactly it takes place. As mentioned above, Sirens of the Deep doesn’t feature Ciri, but it does include Yennefer, which has made it a bit tricky to figure out when it takes place within the main show. According to Netflix, Sirens of the Deep is set between episodes 5 and 6 of the first season of The Witcher, and it’s important to remember that season 1 was told in a non-linear style.

The Witcher season 1, episode 5, “Bottled Appeтιтes”, sees Jaskier and Geralt coming across a Djinn, which brings them a lot of trouble. This leads them to meet Yennefer as Jaskier falls ill after unleashing the Djinn. Yennefer wants to use the Djinn to regain her fertility, but the Djinn only responds to Geralt, and he uses his last wish to save her. This marks the beginning of Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship, which is why she’s featured in Sirens of the Deep.

Episode 6, “Rare Species”, sees Geralt and Yennefer reuniting when they, along with Jaskier and a group of monster hunters, are invited on a dragon hunt, during which Geralt and Yennefer briefly reconcile. This is also the episode where Geralt and Jaskier part ways. “Rare Species” is based on another Sword of Destiny short story, тιтled “The Bounds of Reason.”

How The Witcher: Sirens Of The Deep Connects To Nightmare Of The Wolf

It’s All Part Of The Same Universe

If Sirens Of The Deep is part of the continuity of the main show, and, more specifically, it’s set during the events of season 1, then it’s also linked to the other expansions of The Witcher. In 2021, Netflix brought the animated prequel movie Nightmare of the Wolf. The movie takes the audience many years before the events of season 1 to meet a young Vesemir (voiced by Theo James), from how he became a witcher to his role in defending Kaer Morhen and leading young witchers (among them Geralt) to safety.

Without taking the main show into account and only focusing on the animated movies, Sirens of the Deep would be a continuation of Nightmare of the Wolf many, many years later and now focusing on an adult Geralt rather than on Vesemir. The Witcher’s second expansion was the prequel miniseries Blood Origin, set 1200 years before the events of the main show, and which explores the creation of the first witcher and the events that led to the Conjunction of the Spheres. Sirens Of The Deep, then, is another chapter in the extensive universe of The Witcher.
