I Think I’ve Figured Out Why Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards Superhero Suit Is Different In The Fantastic Four: First Steps Trailer

There’s one clear reason why Reed Richards’ superhero suit is different to his MCU teammates in the first teaser trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Viewers were given a first look at Pedro Pascal’s new Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ teaser, though Marvel curiously didn’t put the Fantastic Four leader’s elastic abilities on display. This wasn’t the only difference that was spotted between Reed Richards and his Fantastic Four family, as Pascal’s new MCU hero also has a different costume design.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ teaser trailer has only raised excitement for the already-highly-anticipated MCU Phase 6 reboot. The teaser revealed Marvel Studios will be introducing the most comic-accurate version of the team ever, and First Steps will have all the vibrancy, color, energy and heart of the Fantastic Four’s Marvel Comics storylines. The teaser also gave us a better look at the Fantastic Four’s new costumes in the MCU, and there have been some notable changes from Marvel Comics and from previous live-action adaptations of Marvel’s First Family.

Reed Richards’ Costume Is Different To The Rest Of The Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Teaser Gave Us A Look At The Team’s Costumes

The Fantastic Four in the MCU's First Steps

The MCU’s Fantastic Four will be suiting up in blue-and-white superhero suits for their Marvel Studios debut, which will distance the team from the typical blue-and-black suits from previous live-action incarnations. In Marvel Comics, the Fantastic Four usually suit up in identical costumes, acting as a uniform that presents the team to the public as a fortified superhero family. This has been changed for the MCU, however, as each hero’s costume is slightly different, while Reed Richards’ suit has many differences, most notably in the omission of white details.

While Sue Storm, Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm all have white around their necks and shoulders, and Ben and Johnny have white details also going down their arms, Reed Richards’ costume is completely blue. This strangely differentiates Mister Fantastic from the other members of his team, though he still fits with them, as he wears the same bright shade of blue, reflecting the team’s optimism and positivity, and the striking style of their 1960s-inspired alternate reality. While unconfirmed, it seems there’s one clear reason why Reed Richards’ costume is different to the rest of the Fantastic Four.

Mister Fantastic’s Costume Is Likely Different To Make VFX Easier

Reed Richards’ Powers Require Careful Visual Effects

Arguably, Reed Richards’ superpowers are the hardest to get to look natural when compared to the powers of the other members of the Fantastic Four. Sue Storm can bend light and make herself invisible, Johnny Storm can set himself on fire, and Ben Grimm becomes a rock-like and super-strong being, and all these powers have previously been seen in the MCU. Reed Richards, however, gains plasticity abilities when exposed to cosmic rays, allowing him to stretch his limbs incredible distances and manipulate his own body, which can very easily look awkward on-screen.

Filming for The Fantastic Four: First Steps wrapped in November 2024, so post-production on the movie will still be ongoing. This likely means that Reed Richards’ powers haven’t yet been rendered completely, meaning we didn’t see them in the teaser trailer, and this also explains why his superhero suit is completely blue. It would be far more difficult to make a dual-tone costume look good when stretched, but if his costume is one block color, this process won’t look so unnatural. This makes the work of Marvel Studios’ talented visual effects much easier.

What Else Could Reed Richards’ Different Costume Mean?

Mister Fantastic’s Different Costume Could Symbolize Something Else

Fantastic Four before being transformed in The Fantastic Four First Steps trailer

Typically, it’s Reed Richards himself who designs the costumes for the Fantastic Four after they receive their superpowers and become famous. This means that, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he must have designed his own costume intentionally-different to the others. This could hint at him perhaps putting his ego on display – Reed Richards is the Smartest Man Alive and the leader of the Fantastic Four, so he may want to make sure that everybody knows his position in the team. This could present some interesting dynamics and conflicts for the team in the MCU.
