Jason Statham’s New Action Thriller Adds Oscar-Nominated & Star Wars Stars As Filming Begins

Jason Statham‘s upcoming action thriller gets an update, revealing that four actors have joined the cast as filming begins. After finding success with The Beekeeper in early 2024, Statham has several action movies on the horizon, including one that was announced last year that takes place on a remote Scottish island, with director Baltasar Kormákur previously attached to helm the film. The details released regarding Statham’s Scottish action movie revealed that the actor would be playing a man called Mason who finds his island home under siege after he rescues a young girl from the ocean.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline now reveals more details about this unтιтled Statham action thriller set in Scotland, reporting that Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland) has replaced Kormákur as director and that production has now begun in the UK and Ireland. Four actors have also joined Statham in the action flick, including Bill Nighy (Living), Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), and Daniel Mays (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Black Bear first introduced the film to the market at Cannes last year and co-represents the movie’s U.S. rights alongside Range Select.

Greenland earned generally positive reviews and features a 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

What The New Cast Members Mean For Jason Statham’s Upcoming Action Movie

Where You’ve Seen The Actors Before

Though it’s not clear how each of the new actors will factor into the story of Statham’s action movie, a winning tactic for these films is casting a bigger name actor in the role of the villain. Nighy, who was nominated for Best Actor for his role in Living in 2023, seems like the most likely candidate to take on the role of the big bad. This also wouldn’t be Nighy’s first time playing a villain, as he memorably played Davy Jones in two Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

As for the other actors joining the cast, Mays had a relatively small role as Tivik in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but he’s actually worked with Statham before on 2008’s The Bank Job. Ackie, interestingly, has also appeared in a Star Wars film before, appearing as Jannah in 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Breathnach, on the other hand, who will seemingly be playing the young girl that Statham’s character rescues, is also set to appear in Hamnet opposite Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.

Statham can next be seen leading the cast of A Working Man, an action movie from David Ayer set to release in theaters on March 28, 2025.

Our Take On Statham’s New Action Movie

What Could Separate The Film From Statham’s Other Work In The Genre

From the description of the upcoming film’s plot, it will be par for the course as far as Statham action flicks go. What could set this film apart is not its plot, though, but its setting. Taking place in the beautiful and rugged landscape of Scotland could be an interesting change of pace, since many Statham action films are set in various places around the U.S.

If Nighy is playing the villain, that will be another thing working in the movie’s favor. The British actor was intimidating and empathetic as Davy Jones even though his actual face wasn’t even shown on screen. With production now underway on the new Statham film, more details will hopefully emerge over the coming weeks.
