Kinda Pregnant‘s quirky premise revolves around Amy Schumer’s character, Lainy, pretending to be pregnant. She commits entirely to the bit, wearing a fake pregnancy belly, attending prenatal yoga, and even entering friendships and romantic relationships with people who believe she is expecting. Of course, Lainy can’t get away with her deception forever. In a classic rom-com moment, her big secret dramatically and publically blows up in her face. This was inevitable in Kinda Pregnant, so why did Lainy start pretending to be pregnant in the first place?

The 2025 Netflix rom-com starts by introducing a young Lainy and her best friend, Kate, pretending to give birth on the playground. Lainy stole the fake belly from the maternity store in Kinda Pregnant, but she only put it on again after Kate became friends with another pregnant coworker (whom Lainy hated). When Lainy left home with the belly on, people on the street gave her smiles, compliments, and even flowers. Between Lainy’s own belief that pregnancy was the best part of a woman’s life and the reinforcement that people treated pregnant women as if they had more value, she essentially became addicted to the ruse.

There was essentially no way that Lainy could carry on pretending to be pregnant once she made a friend and entered into a romantic relationship. They would clearly notice that something was off when she never had a baby. While Lainy intended to come clean at some point before the end of Kinda Pregnant, she lost her chance when Kate’s friend Shirly invited Megan and Josh to her baby shower and publically called Lainy out for planning to get an abortion. She was left with no choice but to confess. Luckily for Lainy, everyone forgave her in the end, and she and Josh seemingly got their happily ever after.
