How To Train Your Dragon Super Bowl Trailer: Live-Action Hiccup & Toothless Take To The Sky

Hiccup and Toothless embark on their first flight in a new trailer for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon. The upcoming feature is a remake of the original animated movie, which itself is adapted from the children’s book of the same name by Cressida Cowell. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon follows a young Viking boy named Hiccup (Mason Thames) who befriends the fearsome dragon Toothless, despite being raised to kill dragons. The ensemble cast also includes Gerard Butler, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Peter Serafinowicz.

During Sunday’s Super Bowl broadcast, Universal Pictures shared a new teaser for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon ahead of a full trailer launch on Wednesday. The 30-second ad spot begins with Hiccup and Toothless tentatively beginning their friendship, before bursting into the grandeur of the duo flying through the sky together. However, their joy is checked by a glimpse at a scene of the impending battle in which they will have to take part. Check out the teaser below:

There Is More To Come

While this ad spot is just a partial glimpse at what will be a longer How to Train Your Dragon trailer, it does offer some insight into how the upcoming movie will look. By highlighting the flying sequence, it showcases the way that one of the most iconic elements of the original animated movie will be brought to the screen in a much more realistic fashion. The realism of the effects highlight the dizzying danger of being midair, but they also bring the exhilarating experience to life in a very different way.

It seems highly likely that the upcoming trailer will include an even closer look at the flying sequence. However, the new footage introduced around Hiccup and Toothless’ flight hints that the trailer will spend more time with characters other than the two leads. There is a vast ensemble of characters in How to Train Your Dragon that have yet to be properly spotlighted in a major way, including the blacksmith Gobber the Belch (Frost) and Hiccup’s best friend Fishlegs Ingerman (Dennison).

Our Take On The How To Train Your Dragon Teaser

Hiccup And Toothless Are The Core Of The Movie

Ultimately, even though this glimpse at the anticipated 2025 movie is brief, the new How to Train Your Dragon ad spot highlights its most important element, which is the near-instant bond that develops between Toothless and Hiccup. As the core of the story, which requires Hiccup to intentionally undermine the foundation of the society in which he grew up, it is very important that the movie gets their dynamic correct. So far, the ad campaign seems to promise that it has indeed done so.
