I Don’t Think The MCU Can Ignore ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Crying Thor Scene Despite It Being A One-Off Joke

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was primarily a comedy, with many scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film being played off for jokes, including one where Thor could be seen crying over what appeared to be a ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. However, the film was firmly set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning that even ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s Easter Eggs are part of the universe’s canon. With this in mind, I can’t help but think that following up on this Thor scene is important, especially with what is now known about the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Multiverse Saga has attempted to tell a very complex story, that has seen characters appear from all kinds of different places in Marvel canon. This allowed Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Spider-Man follow-ups to occur in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and an exciting Illuminati of familiar characters to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, only one of these references seems to be clearly unresolved, with the possibility of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s death hanging like a shadow over his next appearance.

I Don’t Think ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine’s Thor Joke Was Supposed To Have An Answer – But It Might Now Need One

The Scene Is Sad And Thoughtful About The MCU’s Future

One of the most notable scenes in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine saw Thor crying over a ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool, using repurposed footage from Thor: The Dark World. In the scene, Thor can be seen crying, leaving ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool wondering why this has happened from behind the screen in the TVA. Paradox tells him quickly that he wasn’t supposed to see this event yet, and the scene ends hurriedly. It seems that this was only supposed to be a joke, and recent confirmations from the filmmakers have gone on to solidify this.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Shawn Levy revealed that they “really set out to make a movie that was not a setup for another movie or a sequel to anything” before answering why Thor was crying in the scene, saying “I don’t f—ing know.” With this in mind, it seems that the scene was not intended to be anything more than a single joke. However, this glimpsed future is now a part of the MCU multiverse, and there is a potential opportunity to return to it soon.

Why Avengers: Secret Wars Makes The Thor Crying Joke Especially Hard To Ignore

The Setup For That Scene Will Inevitably Occur In The Upcoming Film

Avengers: Secret Wars is set to include all kinds of characters from throughout the entire Marvel multiverse. Caught in a battle between universes and worlds, it would be strange if ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Thor both did not appear in the film. With both of these characters in the same story, the potential for seeing this scene realized becomes even more likely. The tension of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s looming death, near Thor, would be impossible to ignore in the film.

While Marvel clearly wants more of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool following the box office success of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, saying goodbye to the character might actually make more sense as the franchise moves into a new saga.

Ryan Reynolds may not have many more ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool films left in him, and it is certainly not impossible that the actor may soon be done with the role. Giving ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool a powerful and emotional ending, while referring to this scene, could help to give the character a great exit from the franchise. While Marvel clearly wants more of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool following the box office success of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine, saying goodbye to the character might actually make more sense as the franchise moves into a new saga.

I Think The MCU Might Need To Answer The Crying Thor Mystery By The End Of The Multiverse Saga

All Multiversal Story Threads Will Need Clear Resolution Soon

The end of the Multiverse Saga looms just ahead, and it is important that the franchise gives it a thoughtful and comprehensive conclusion. That will require following up on all of the emotional teases from throughout the series, including Thor crying over ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s death. This will either need to occur in the franchise, or it will need to be shown how this eventuality was avoided. Either way, this is potentially too important a scene to never follow up on entirely.

Many characters, including X-23 are rumored to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, and it is all but ᴀssured that two of the franchise’s most popular heroes will be there. This will create the perfect opportunity to follow up on any dangling threads in order to allow the franchise to move forward. I know there are many more stories ahead for the MCU, but what has come before, whether in jokes or in MCU post-credit scene trends, is important to the universe, and cannot be forgotten.

I can’t wait to see Avengers: Secret Wars, although I will admit that the film will have a lot to live up to. Marvel clearly hopes to outdo the incredible success that they had with Avengers: Endgame, and that feels like an almost impossible task. Still, I am excited to see whatever comes from it, even if I feel there is a great deal of work the film will have to do with past Marvel Cinematic Universe storylines in order to succeed. I hope that they find a way to do so in a satisfying way.
