Is Mile 22 Worth Watching? (& Where To Stream The Movie Online)

The Mark Wahlberg action flick, Mile 22, did not make as big a splash as the movie star may have hoped, and some fans may be wondering if it’s worth returning to. The fourth collaboration between director Pete Berg and Mark Wahlberg after Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, Mile 22 follows an elite group of CIA agents, called Overwatch, tasked with the most difficult and dangerous missions. Mark Wahlberg is in his action movie bag as Office James Silva, the field leader of Overwatch, and a former Force Recon Marine.

Wahlberg is joined by an ensemble cast including Lauren Cohan, John Malkovich, Ronda Rousey, and Indonesian action star Iko Uwais as Li Noor, an ex-Special Forces operator from the fictional country of Indocarr, whose survival and extraction is Overwatch’s mission in Mile 22. Berg’s film came out on August 17, 2018, to less than stellar reviews with a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes and a paltry $66 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo). It’s easily available to stream, rent, or buy, however, so action fans may want to know if it’s worth the time.

Mile 22 Is Not Worth Watching

The Poorly Edited Action Lets Mile 22 Down

Unfortunately, Mile 22 is not worth watching and mostly fails at what it’s trying to do. What’s more, there are many, many similar options that should be selected first. Mile 22 is an action-packed thrill ride that is short on just about everything except explosions and bullets. The amount of action sequences is almost exhausting and while they go on for incredibly long stretches, they rarely, if ever, lead to anything substantial. The characters are difficult to connect with in general, but when they’re only given a few moments in between gunfights, there’s almost nothing to grab onto.

An even greater sin is that the action itself is not even enjoyable to watch. The quick cuts and erratic editing stop and start fight sequences at the worst times, making them feel incoherent and unsatisfying. Iko Uwais is one of the best screen fighters currently working and to take away the impact of his punches, kicks, and other incredible moves is a real disappointment.

As an action film, a Wahlberg movie, and an Uwais movie, there are just plenty of better options to select if someone’s in the mood for a movie similar in tone to Mile 22.

Wahlberg also has plenty of other action roles in a similar vein that gives him more room to maneuver; some, like Lone Survivor, are even directed by Pete Berg. As an action film, a Wahlberg movie, and an Uwais movie, there are just plenty of better options to select if someone’s in the mood for a movie similar in tone to Mile 22.
