“It’s Not Like They’re Not Trying”: The Goonies 2 Addressed By Ke Huy Quan Amid Rumors Of Reunion Sequel Movie

Ke Huy Quan has addressed the rumors that The Goonies 2 is being made. Quan starred in The Goonies, which was released in 1985 and is seen as a classic adventure movie. The story follows a group of friends who find a pirate map and follow it in an attempt to find lost treasure. In addition to Quan, the cast of The Goonies includes Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Corey Feldman. For the past few years, several rumors have swirled that a sequel to The Goonies is in development.

On an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, Quan addresses the fact that there are constant rumors about The Goonies 2 being made. Quan reveals that Warner Bros. has hired numerous writers in recent years to write The Goonies 2. However, none of the scripts have ever been approved by Steven Spielberg, who came up with the story for the original film. If a script is eventually greenlit, Quan claims that he would be excited to film a sequel to The Goonies. Read Quan’s full comments below:

You know, it’s interesting. It never fails. Every couple of years or so, there’s always a Goonies rumor. I remember just recently, there was one that says, ‘We’re doing a sequel with Steven Spielberg directing, and all the kids are back,’ and I know nothing about that, so I know that couldn’t be true. It’s something that, I’m sure Warner Bros. wants to do it— all of us, all of us want to do it.

But it’s such a beloved movie… I’m gonna leave it up to Spielberg. I mean, he’s the man that, obviously, without him, there’s no Goonies. And unfortunately we lost the captain of our ship, Dick Donner. But who knows? I’ll be there if they have a script.

No, I have not [ever seen a sequel script], I have not. But what I do know is that it’s not like they’re not trying. In the last four years, Warner Bros. has tried. We’ve hired numerous writers, and there are multiple scripts out there. But somehow, I guess Spielberg feels that none of them lives up to the original.

What Ke Huy Quan’s Comments Mean For The Goonies 2

The Goonies 2 Could Still Be Made

Rumors of a sequel to The Goonies being made have circulated ever since the release of the original movie. After the success of the 1985 film, numerous scripts for The Goonies 2 were written. However, as Quan noted in a 2023 interview, no script for The Goonies 2 has lived up to the original film. According to Quan, this is the main reason why The Goonies 2 has not been made. However, his most recent comments confirm that Warner Bros. is still trying to make a sequel to The Goonies.

Perhaps Quan could play a new kid’s parent in a potential sequel to The Goonies.

Since Warner Bros. is still trying to make The Goonies 2, it is possible that the film will be greenlit in the coming years. Since it has been 40 years since the release of the original film, it is unclear what the story would be. Even though Quan claimed he would love to star in a sequel to The Goonies, there’s a chance that the original cast are all too old to reprise their roles. However, perhaps Quan could play a new kid’s parent in a potential sequel.

It Would Be Exciting If The Goonies 2 Got Greenlit

Quan also noted that The Goonies director Richard Donner has pᴀssed away. Because of this, it would be hard for a sequel to live up to the original. However, if Spielberg thought a script for The Goonies 2 was solid, and perhaps even wanted to direct the project himself, it would be very exciting to see a legacy sequel for the iconic movie get made. Therefore, even though it seems like The Goonies 2 is unlikely to ever happen, it would be very exciting if it does eventually get greenlit.
