“Under The Right Hands… Worlds Can Be Built”: Steven Yeun Hypes “Genius” Parasite Director’s New Sci-Fi Movie As Its Release Finally Approaches

Actor Steven Yeun hypes up the upcoming sci-fi movie Mickey 17. Mickey 17 is the latest film from South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho, who is best known internationally for his Best Picture winning film Parasite. Adapted from the novel of the same name, Mickey 17 follows the story of a man who voluntarily signs up to be an “expendable,” embarking on an intergalactic suicide mission in an attempt to colonize an ice planet. The Mickey 17 cast features Robert Pattinson in the lead role with a supporting cast that includes Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Bronwyn James.

Speaking with Collider, Yeun hypes up Mickey 17. Asked why he chose to work on Mickey 17, Yeun states “I mean really, it was Bong.” He reveals that working with the visionary director is “genuinely an incredible experience.” The actor teases how this “genius” storytelling manifests in Mickey 17, saying that people will see that “worlds can be built and imagination knows no bounds.” Check out the full quote from Yeun below:

“I mean really, it was Bong. Every time it’s Bong, you know, I’ve been able to work with him twice now and it’s genuinely an incredible experience. He’s a masterful, genius storyteller, and when you guys see this film, you guys will see that under the right hands like this, I think worlds can be built and imagination knows no bounds.”

What This Means For Mickey 17

Mickey 17 Is Likely Worth The Wait

Yeun’s quote implies that Mickey 17 will be well worth its wait. The movie was originally supposed to be released in March 2024, but a series of production delays caused it to move back. It was moved to January 2025, but then delayed again to April before switching spots with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Now, Mickey 17 will finally be released on March 7, and Yeun’s quote makes it sound like the wait will be worth it.

The actor’s perspective also provides a hint at the vast creativity behind Mickey 17. Yeun previously worked with Bong on Okja, an off-the-wall eco-thriller released on Netflix in 2017. Okja already showed how Bong can craft a truly creative and original universe. If Mickey 17 shows that “imagination knows no bounds,” the film could be even more out-there and creative than his previous work. This is a great sign for Bong and the movie as it prepares for release.

Mickey 17‘s delays have only increased anticipation for the film. Yeun’s quote only makes this more exciting, teasing the “worlds” to be “built” and discovered in the sci-fi film. Mickey 17 is being released at a time of year when there is often a drought in quality films. If it goes as well as Yeun implies, however, Mickey 17 may well be the first truly great film of 2025.
