2025 Horror Thriller Earns Coveted Rotten Tomatoes Score Of Over 90% From Both Audiences & Critics

Companion has just achieved an incredible accomplishment, shortly after its theatrical debut. Led by Sophie Thatcher’s Iris, it tells the story of a robot who has been fully convinced that she is a human being. The horror-comedy features Jack Quaid (The Boys), Lukas Gage (Euphoria), Rupert Friend (The Death of Stalin), and even more stars. It was first released on January 31, 2025, and it has already secured the second-highest place at the weekend box office with a 3-day take of $9.4 million.

The box office take has been impressive, but the reviews have been even better. Among horror movies, Companion has reached a rare milestone. It has officially secured Certified Fresh and Verified H๏τ Rotten Tomatoes scores with relative ease. It currently sits at a 94% Tomatometer score, while audiences have offered a 91% Popcornmeter score.

January is always a weak month at the box office, but Companion could very well be the spark that brings attention to theaters in February. It has already done well at the box office, having nearly earned enough to cover its $10 million budget. It will need around $25 million to achieve a profit, thanks to marketing costs and theaters taking their cuts, but this is an exceptional start. The positive word-of-mouth, driven by Companion‘s brilliant reviews, should be more than enough to draw new viewers. Some may even choose to return for second viewings.

Our Take On Companion’s Reception

A High-Concept Movie Making Waves

Iris with blank white eyes in Companion

A humanoid robot is hardly an original concept in science fiction, but this movie manages to make a tired concept into a wholly new premise. The reviewers have, rightfully, praised the performances, the visual effects, the writing, and everything else about it. Screen Rant‘s Alex Harrison reviewed Companion and argued that it “plays like a sci-fi-tinged, comedic thriller. It’s designed to entertain, and entertain it does.” Without delving too far into science fiction to make its story entirely unrelatable, it makes for a fun adventure. That, in reality, is all that it needed to do.
