Dog Man Just Set A Record That DreamWorks Hasn’t Done In Its 31 Year History

DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man has finally been released, and it just set a record that the studio hasn’t done in its 31-year history. DreamWorks has made a lot of movies throughout its years, with classic franchises like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon becoming household names. However, Dog Man has managed to pull off one incredible feat that no other DreamWorks movie has done yet.

A spinoff of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Dog Man tells the story of a police officer and his canine companion who are caught in a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly explosion. The only way to save them is to sew the dog’s head on the man’s body, leading to the birth of the SUPA cop Dog Man. Although the dog is the brains of the duo, there is one thing he can’t do that every other cop in the movie can, with this being a mᴀssive deal in the history of DreamWorks Animation.

Dog Man Is DreamWorks Animation’s First Movie With A Silent Protagonist

Out Of All Of DreamWorks’ Movies

After 31 years of making movies, Dog Man is the first DreamWorks Animation movie to feature a silent protagonist. After Dog Man is created, the character isn’t able to speak at all, with him only communicating in barks, growls, and other various dog noises. Dog Man is unique in this, as every other DreamWorks protagonist from throughout the studio’s history has been able to communicate using words.

The only potential caveat to this comes from DreamWorks’ 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. In the movie, Spirit doesn’t technically speak English. However, Matt Damon provides the voice of Spirit in some narrated monologues, meaning that the protagonist is able to communicate to the audience. Dog Man has no voice, meaning that the movie doesn’t rely on spoken word at all to communicate the canine cops’ emotions.

Dog Man’s “Voice” Is Provided By The Movie’s Director

Peter Hastings Plays The тιтular Character

Although Dog Man doesn’t speak, he does have a voice in the form of his dog noises. Interestingly, the credits of Dog Man reveal that Dog Man’s voice is provided by Peter Hastings. Peter Hastings is the director of Dog Man, with him also providing the voice of the тιтular protagonist.

Peter Hastings is also the voice of Officer Knight, the police officer whose body is used as the lower half of Dog Man. Officer Knight is heard throughout the beginning of Dog Man, with Hastings actually getting to use words during his scenes. However, the majority of Hasting’s vocal performance in Dog Man is dog noises, with this being an interesting fact for fans of the film’s production.
