After the success of 2020’s The Old Guard, Netflix was quick to order a sequel, but details about the forthcoming The Old Guard 2 have been scant until only recently. The action thriller centers on a team of seemingly immortal warriors who change the course of world history by protecting humanity. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard is based on the eponymous graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández.

Charlize Theron stars as Andromache of Scythia (“Andy”), the leader and oldest member of the тιтular group. The film adaption follows her attempts to save and protect U.S. Marine Nile Freeman (KiKi Layne), who is killed in action but then comes back to life. Dropped on Netflix during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, the film found instant success and with the extensive mythology of The Old Guard, a sequel was a distinct possibility. Though Netflix quickly green-lit The Old Guard 2 the project moved slowly for years before finally ramping up.

Netflix Announces The Release Date For The Old Guard 2

More than half a year after the latest update concerning the action sequel, the most recent news finally confirms the release date for The Old Guard 2. Now set to arrive in the peak summer months, The Old Guard 2 will debut on July 2, 2025, and promises “insane action“. Along with the release date, Netflix dropped a BTS video that shows star Charlize Theron displaying her action chops in various stunts. Though the video reveals little about the movie, it is likely meant as a teaser for a trailer which should be coming soon.

The Sequel Arrives This Summer

In July 2024, Charlize Theron revealed that The Old Guard 2 was in post-production, but it would take the better part of a year before any additional news surfaced. Finally, Netflix announced in January 2025 that the action-packed sequel was due to arrive on July 2, 2025.

The Entire Crew Is Returning For The Sequel

Around the same time that the sequel was announced, it was also confirmed that the main cast of the first film would return in its entirety. Led by Charlize Theron as Andy, the sequel has been able to maintain continuity while also adding some big names to the cast as well. Along with the returning stars, Academy Award nominee Uma Thurman has been tapped to play an undisclosed role. Similarly, Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians fame will star in a part that hasn’t been announced yet.

What Will Happen In The Long-Awaited Sequel?

The Old Guard ends with Merrick being defeated, and Andy becoming mortal. After being set-up by Booker, Andromache of Scythia is less than pleased and banishes her friend from the team for a full century. Enter Copley, who is recruited to help The Old Guard operate quietly. Over the years, members of the team have been seen in pH๏τos, so they’ll need to find new ways to stay under-the-radar. Six months after Booker and his colleagues part ways, Quynh — the first immortal that Andy found — re-emerges in a Paris apartment after being trapped underwater, in a coffin, for 500 years.

Ngo will be key to The Old Guard 2‘s storyline, and it is expected that Andy and Quynh will have a complicated relationship upon reuniting. Based on the final moments of The Old Guard, it seems like Quynh could be the sequel’s primary villain, if only because of her menacing demeanor. It was also revealed that the ending of The Old Guard 2 will set up a trilogy, meaning whatever happens in the sequel won’t be the end of the story.
