6 Months Later, I’m Still Thinking About That Thor Crying Scene In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine And What It Means For Ryan Reynolds’ MCU Future

ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine finally brought ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool over to the MCU and debuted a litany of other characters to boot, but the one question that lingers in my mind (and many others, I’d wager) concerns Thor’s cameo and why he was crying. I know it’s been discussed for months, but recent comments from those in the know, and those who should be, suggest that this is not a question that will fall by the wayside. Nor should it, in my opinion, as it specifically concerns the nature of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s MCU future and his relationship with established heroes.

Despite debuting in the MCU, it’s notable how few established MCU characters ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool has communicated with so far. The many cameos in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine mostly comprise mutants from Fox’s X-Men franchise and stars of older superhero movies that all joined ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool in featuring in their first MCU movie. Nevertheless, MCU icons like the Avengers made a fleeting appearance on some TVA screens. The one scene on those screens that continues to boggle my mind depicted Thor crying over ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s beaten body, which Paradox revealed was a scene from ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool’s future. So, what gives?

Why Thor Was Crying In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Is Still A Mystery

Shawn Levy Never Had A Plan And Ryan Reynolds Won’t Elaborate

Unfortunately, the answer to that question remains a mystery. While fans are offering plenty of theories about why Thor was crying, including the possibility that it will be a prank or that Paradox doctored the footage, the very people responsible for creating the footage have remained elusive and тιԍнт-lipped. In fact, it’s even worse than that in the case of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine director, Shawn Levy, who admitted in an interview with Entertainment Weekly just weeks after ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine‘s release I don’t f—ing know. His full quote is as follows:

“I have to be honest with you, we really set out to make a movie that was not a setup for another movie or a sequel to anything. Kevin never insisted that we service some story beyond. I’ve been asked, for instance, why is Thor crying. The answer being: I don’t f—ing know. No one does, but I’d sure love to be the guy who helps find out why.”

Levy seems to be suggesting here that the footage was included as a gag, albeit one that would pervade the entire movie as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool keeps bringing the moment up, and nothing more. Prefacing his bemusement with the fact that Marvel boss Kevin Feige specifically didn’t require them to set up future moments suggests that this was not part of some grand plan. Then again, Ryan Reynolds took to social media days prior to ᴀssert that he does, in fact, know why Thor is crying, stating in an Instagram post “I know why Thor was crying. I can’t unknow[sic] it.

Perhaps Reynolds was being characteristically flippant and lying when he said he “knows.”

Both responses are frustratingly vague. Perhaps Reynolds was being characteristically flippant and lying when he said he “knows.” While I’m concerned that Shawn Levy seems to be implying that it was just a throwaway gag, however, his eagerness to “find out” is supported by a comment made by Chris Hemsworth, who was the most recent figure involved (at least technically) to weigh in on the matter.

Chris Hemsworth Said There Will Be An Answer One Day For Why Thor Was Crying

Chris Hemsworth Also Doesn’t Know But Said Marvel Will Reveal All

Thor’s fleeting scene in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine was actually created using footage from Thor: The Dark World, where Thor held and cried over Loki as he lay “dying.” This meant that Chris Hemsworth wasn’t actually present on the set of ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine despite his cameo. Nevertheless, it stands to reason that he might have been brought into the loop regarding why the character he portrays would be crying over ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case, as Hemsworth revealed in an interview with @blackgirlnerds (posted by @heychalice on TikTok) that he is also oblivious.

“I’m asking the same question. I don’t know. You’ll have to uh…you’ll have to, you know, keep your focus on the Marvel Universe, because there will be an answer, it will be told one day.”

It’s heartening to hear Chris Hemsworth ᴀssure us that the answer will be revealed down the line, but I’m skeptical that he knows this for sure. What appears certain is that he is just as mystified by the details as the rest of us, and I can only hope that his extensive experience working with the MCU validates his ᴀssurances. It is, after all, a particularly prolific mystery and one that Marvel Studios could certainly stand to elucidate in a future MCU installment to maximize fan service. In fact, I think it should be a priority.

Marvel Cannot Forget To Reveal Why Thor Was Crying In ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine

The Scene Should Appear In An Avengers Movie

It isn’t as if there is a lack of opportunities for Marvel Studios to explain why Thor will be crying. The prevailing theory is that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool will reappear in Avengers: Secret Wars or possibly Avengers: Doomsday, where the climactic calamity will deliver high stakes in spades just as the last two Avengers movies did. Many theories center on the idea that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool and Thor will ally against a common enemy like Doctor Doom before this scene then plays out as ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool dies (or pretends to die) at the hands of the Multiverse Saga’s arch-villain.

Ryan Reynolds isn’t currently confirmed to be a part of the cast for upcoming Avengers movies.

I’m a little concerned that Levy’s inclusion of the scene only to reveal no greater plan for it suggests that this will remain the case. Nevertheless, I think it behooves Marvel to build around it instead and pay off the future Paradox talked about years after ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool first saw it on-screen. Given Ryan Reynolds has suggested that ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine will be his last ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool movie for some time, I think Avengers: Secret Wars is the perfect place to have ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool brought in as a secondary character and finally deliver the answer we’ve been waiting for.
