Captain America: Brave New World comes to theaters soon, and Anthony Mackie, the star of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, recently opened up about working with Harrison Ford in the film. Notably, both stars are taking on established roles: Mackie will be making his first feature-length appearance as Captain America, following Chris Evans, and Ford has inherited the role of Thaddeus Ross from the late William Hurt. Ross [Mackie, in a Fordian growl]: “THIS IS WHY IT HAPPENED!”
End scene.
“But that was the first f*ckin’ scene we sH๏τ together,” Mackie says. “So I’m nervous. I’m in my head like, This is my moment.”
When he walked into the control room, his mouth and mind failed him. Instead of his lines, all he could muster was a dramatic, “Ugggggghhaaaaaaaah.”
Cut. Take two.
“Ugggggghhaaaaaaaah.”
Cut.
“And I couldn’t remember my line,” Mackie says, making what sounds like every actor’s worst nightmare into the best bar story I’ve heard in a minute. “I’m like, ‘F*ck. I’m acting with Harrison Ford.’”
Third take isn’t much better, so Ford pulls him out of the room and into the hallway. “You know, it’s not that big of a deal,” the icon says. “Relax, kid.” The kid relaxes. They knock out the scene. Ford shakes his hand: “All right. Let’s go.”
In outlining this story, Mackie expressed genuine excitement for the upcoming film. “It’s literally the best movie it can be,” he said. “It stays in the lines of Marvel. It stays in the lines of Captain America, and it’s fun, and it’s big.” Alongside his appreciation for Ford, it seems that the actor had a great time making the film and is excited for audiences to see it. This cooperation behind the scenes bodes well for the film’s eventual quality.
