Scream Franchise Star’s New 2025 Horror Movie Debuts With Very High Rotten Tomatoes Score

When it comes to the evolution of the slasher subgenre of horror, the release of Scream in 1996 was a game-changer. The success of the Wes Craven film led to five sequels, with 2022’s Scream introducing a host of new characters into the mix. Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter became central figures in this new story, but the “Core Four” also included Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin.

The Core Four returned in the well-reviewed Scream 6 in 2023, but the upcoming Scream 7 is set to make some big changes. Barrera and Ortega are both not returning, but Gooding and Brown are. Gooding isn’t limiting his time in the horror genre to one franchise, though, and, before he returns as Chad, he’s set to star in an upcoming slasher film from director Josh Ruben.

The Scream 7 cast will also feature the return of legacy characters like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox).

Heart Eyes’ Is Off To A Great Start On Rotten Tomatoes

The Slasher Film Is A Win With Critics

Heart Eyes has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s made a strong first impression. Serving as Ruben’s follow-up to Werewolves Within (2021), the upcoming slasher movie chronicles the kills of the Heart Eyes Killer, who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. Gooding stars in the film opposite Jordana Brewster, Devon Sawa, Olivia Holt, Ben Black, and Gigi Zumbado. With the film hitting theaters on February 7, Heart Eyes reviews are now making their way online, with critics sharing their thoughts on the slasher.

As critics share their thoughts on the movie, Heart Eyes has now debuted on Rotten Tomatoes to an impressive score of 91% with 22 reviews, as of writing. This score is sure to fluctuate as more reviews are added, but this is obviously a strong start for the horror movie. An audience score for Heart Eyes isn’t available yet, but one should take shape next week when the movie hits theaters.

Heart Eyes is currently beating 2022’s Scream (76%) and Scream 6 (77%) on Rotten Tomatoes. It also beats Ruben’s previous movie, Werewolves Within (86%).

What Heart Eyes’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Means For The Movie

Breaking Down The Horror Flick’s High Score

Though Molly Freeman awarded Heart Eyes a lackluster score of only five out of 10 in her review for ScreenRant, the Rotten Tomatoes score suggests that other critics are enjoying the film a bit more. It’s important to note a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score doesn’t mean most critics have given it a 9.1 out of 10, it means 91% of the 22 critics who have reviews on the site have given the film a 6 out of 10 or higher. From the looks of things, most of the reviews are hovering around this six and seven out of 10 range.

The general sentiment from the available reviews is that Heart Eyes doesn’t break the mold as a slasher movie, but it does offer up some fun kills, surprising reveals, and good laughs. With its distinctive new killer design and mostly positive reviews, Heart Eyes could be poised to succeed at the box office. Rotten Tomatoes is now a major resource that audiences use when deciding whether to see a movie in theaters, and 91% clearly suggests that the film is entertaining.
