Dwayne Johnson’s $428M Monster Movie Is A Success Again 7 Years Later After Getting A New Streaming Home

Dwayne Johnson‘s $428 million monster movie became a success again seven years later, earning its revitalization after also getting a new streaming home. Johnson has been the star of many high-octane action movies across his career, something he continues to embrace to this day. Whether it’s starring in the cast of Red One, a holiday action comedy, or a superhero film like 2022’s Black Adam, the star has often been attached to thrilling projects. While some have been more critically well-received than others, he remains a big box office draw.

This was especially the case in the 2010s, when he collaborated with director Brad Peyton on a number of successful, high-budget action movies. In 2012, he starred in the action-adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which earned $335 million against an $80 million budget, despite mixed reception. The pair would collaborate again in 2015 for San Andreas, a disaster movie that once again got mixed reviews, but scored $474 million at the box office with a $110 million budget. However, their third collaboration is now a major streaming success, following its theatrical release in 2018.

Rampage Has Become A Gigantic Streaming Hit

The Movie Got A New Streaming Home On January 26

After getting a new streaming home, Rampage has become a mᴀssive success, reflecting its original popularity when it came out in 2018. Based on the 1986 video game of the same name, the movie follows Johnson’s Davis Okoye, a former Special Forces soldier and primatologist who teams up with a western lowland gorilla, George, to stop two mutant animals from destroying Chicago. Despite Rampage‘s mixed reviews once again, the movie earned $428 million against a $120-140 million budget, becoming a financial success in the process.

Now, Flixpatrol reports that Rampage has become a major streaming success after its debut on Prime Video on January 26, 2025. According to the site, it’s the Number 4 movie on the platform in the US as of January 30, 2025. This puts it above The Calendar Killer, In the Land of Saints and Sinners, The Equalizer, My Old ᴀss, The Fall Guy, and the Number 10 film, The Equalizer 2. It also puts it below Unstoppable, Jurᴀssic World, and the current Number 1 movie on the platform, Blink Twice.

The video game adaptation’s success on Prime Video shows how well-liked Johnson’s action movies are, even years after they’ve been released. Rampage in particular is unique because of its giant monster factor, offering a destructive action movie reminiscent of films like Godzilla and King Kong. This makes it stand out in the actor’s career, with its renewed popularity proving it’s still considered a strong entry in his career after all this time.

Rampage is the final collaboration between Johnson and Peyton as of writing.
