Avengers: Doomsday Theory Explains How RDJ’s Doctor Doom Replaces Kang In The MCU Without Wasting All Of Marvel’s Setup

Avengers: Doomsday will introduce Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new main villain is set up by Kang the Conqueror’s MCU story in a new intriguing theory. Jonathan Majors played Kang and all of his variants in the MCU. The star was set to be the face of the Multiverse Saga, with Kang the Conqueror being the franchise’s new Big Bad after Thanos’ defeat. However, none of that would come to happen. Jonathan Majors was fired by Marvel due to being found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harᴀssment and ᴀssault.

With Majors out, Marvel has seemingly abandoned its plans for Kang and his variants. Instead, Avengers: Doomsday‘s story was reworked, with Robert Downey Jr. being cast as Doctor Doom, which changed the film’s name from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to the Doom-centric it is now. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has dodged questions about Marvel’s plans for Kang in the past. With no new updates on the character playing a role in the MCU’s upcoming movies, a new Avengers: Doomsday theory explains how Marvel might not be done with Kang just yet, and Doctor Doom would benefit from it.

The Multiverse Saga Can’t Have Built Up Kang For Nothing

The MCU Spent A Lot Of Time On The Villain

Before Kang the Conqueror entered the MCU, Marvel Studios set him up through variants. Disney+’s Loki was the project in charge of making sure that the audience and Marvel characters would fear Kang when he was introduced. Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief learned all that he could about the first Multiversal War that put He Who Remains, the MCU’s first revealed Kang variant, in charge of the Sacred Timeline. He Who Remains controlled the TVA, pruning timelines that branched from how things should be. However, after he was killed, the multiverse was opened for Marvel to explore.

Then came Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The movie was responsible for Kang the Conqueror’s debut in the MCU. It revealed that other Kang variants had banished the villain to the Quantum Realm, where Kang forged an alliance with Janet van Dyne before being betrayed and trapped with no means of escape. Shockingly, Ant-Man and the Wasp seemingly killed Kang at the end of the movie. Back then, Marvel was likely planning to bring back the character, but with Doctor Doom now acting as the MCU’s new main villain, Majors’ Kang could just stay ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. However, Kang’s variants could return.

Jonathan Majors Is Not Needed For Kang Variants To Return

The Multiverse Can Lead To New Versions Of The Many Kangs

One of the most confusing decisions Marvel made during the Multiverse Saga was the fact that Jonathan Majors played all Kang variants. The MCU has established with characters like Spider-Man, Loki, and Mr. Fantastic that multiverse variants do not need to look the same in every universe. One of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s post-credits scenes showed just how many Kang variants were loose in the MCU. The film introduced the Council of Kangs, which is a team of multiverse Kang variants seemingly ruled by three versions of the villain. They were preparing to attack after Kang the Conqueror died.

While Majors was the face of the thousands of variants in the Council of Kangs, there is an easy solution for them to return. Marvel does not need the actor to make Kang’s variants work. Doing what the MCU has done before, Marvel could recast the variants with different actors playing each version of Kang. This way, no single actor would be tasked with living up to the high level of Majors’ performances as the Kangs, and Marvel could make the Council of Kangs more exciting by recruiting multiple beloved stars for the roles, avoiding the Kangs going to waste.

Avengers: Doomsday Theory Claims Doctor Doom Wants To Undo The Events Started By He Who Remains

Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel Villain Can Connect To Kang’s Story

Since Marvel spent multiple projects on the development of Kang the Conqueror and his variants, it would be bad if that storyline were just dropped in favor of Doctor Doom’s debut with no explanation or resolution. Avoiding that, a new Avengers: Doomsday theory shared on Reddit shows how Marvel can use the plans set up by Kang for Doctor Doom in a smooth transition. According to the MCU theory, Avengers: Doomsday could reveal that Victor von Doom is trying to do the same thing that He Who Remains did. He wants a “Sacred Timeline” again, but Doom would control it.

However, the twist is that Doctor Doom is just trying to restore things to how they used to be. The theory claims that the first Multiversal War that put He Who Remains in charge of the Sacred Timeline led to the Kang variant making changes to the original MCU timeline to fit his vision. As such, Doctor Doom lost the power he had as the ruler of the original timeline. With He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, the multiverse being open now allows Doctor Doom and Kang variants to thrive in different universes.

The Avengers: Doomsday theory also uses some of the confirmed and rumored actors for the MCU movie. With Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom and Chris Evans reportedly in the film as a mystery character, the theory suggests that Doom is ᴀssembling his own Dark Avengers with twisted multiverse variants of Marvel heroes and villains to help him get revenge on the Kangs. In the end, Doom could win, similarly to the comics, creating Battleworld for him to rule and setting up Avengers: Secret Wars. Doom and his team destroying the Council of Kangs would make for an epic sequence.

The Avengers Theory’s Explanation For Battleworld’s Creation Is Perfect

The MCU Already Has The Setup For The Key Location

Another interesting part of the theory is related to how Battleworld would come to be in the MCU. In the comics, Battleworld is a patchwork planet created by God Emperor Doom that is made up of several Marvel Comics locations and features heroes and villains from different universes. Like He Who Remains and the TVA used to do, the Avengers: Doomsday theory claims that after Doctor Doom manages to reclaim his power, the villain prunes everything into the Void. The location that was established in Disney+’s Loki and recently returned in ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine would then be turned into Battleworld.

There are a couple of reasons why the Void is the MCU’s perfect stand-in for the comics’ Battleworld. First is the fact that the two locations serve similar purposes. The Void has been used in the MCU as the place where the TVA sends objects, characters, and more from all over the multiverse. Second, by using the Void as the MCU’s version of Battleworld, Marvel would ensure that all the leg work done by Kang the Conqueror, his variants, and the TVA would be used again to set up Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
