When Fear Street: Prom Queen Is Set In The Original Netflix Trilogy’s Timeline

Netflix is expanding its hit horror franchise with Fear Street: Prom Queen, which overlaps with the original movie trilogy’s timeline. Netflix began its adaptations of RL Stine’s popular horror novels in 2021 with its successful Fear Street trilogy, which saw the streaming service adopt a new rollout strategy with one new installment released each Friday between June 2 and June 16. Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 explored various mᴀssacres in Shadyside connected to the “witch” Sarah Fier, though Netflix’s Prom Queen spinoff takes the series in a new direction.

Officially confirmed in 2024, Netfilx’s 2025 Fear Street: Prom Queen movie adapts RL Stine’s 1992 The Prom Queen slasher novel, which served as the 15th book in his Fear Street series. The film follows the students of Shadyside High as the race for Prom Queen unfolds, taking a dark turn when the candidates start to be mysteriously murdered one by one. The 2021 Fear Street movies established that Shadyside teens are no strangers to masked murderers, with Prom Queen’s tragedies filling in the gap between two of the trilogy’s films.

Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen movie is set in 1988. This situates the standalone spinoff right between the events of Fear Street Part Two: 1978 and Fear Street Part One: 1994, taking place ten years after the Camp Nightwing murders and six years before the mall mᴀssacre within Fear Street’s timeline. Continuity-wise, it may seem odd that these murders weren’t mentioned in the 1994-set film, but it still makes sense given the killings weren’t ᴀssociated with Sarah Fier/the Goode family.

Which Original Fear Street Characters Could Return In The Prom Queen Movie

Ziggy Berman & Nick Goode Would Be In Their Late 20s During Prom Queen

While there’s been no confirmation so far about any returning original trilogy characters in Fear Street: Prom Queen, there are a few figures who could reasonably appear in the upcoming film. One character who could make her way into the 1988-set movie is Ziggy Berman, who survived the mᴀssacre in Fear Street Part Two: 1978’s ending and continued living in Shadyside through the 1994 film. Prom Queen could also feature the original trilogy’s Nick Goode, a descendant of the Goode family and sheriff who is revealed to be responsible for the 1978 and 1994 killing sprees.

Netflix has confirmed that Fear Street: Prom Queen will be released on the streaming service in summer 2025.

It’s unlikely that Deena or Sam would appear in Fear Street: Prom Queen, however, as they would only be about 10 years old during the 1988 killings. Even if the 2025 franchise installment doesn’t bring back any previous characters, the trilogy has already established that the fictionalized Shadyside/Sunnyvale area is a very small community. Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if any of Fear Street: Prom Queen’s new characters end up being revealed as family members of some figures from the trilogy.
