A surprising new star has joined Scream 7. The slasher sequel, which will be the sixth to follow the original 1996 hit into theaters, is being directed by original screenwriter Kevin Williamson. While plot details are under wraps, the movie will feature the return of the masked murderer Ghostface, a mantle that has been taken on by a new killer or set of killers in each movie. The cast of the upcoming Scream 7 already includes legacy stars Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Scream 7 has cast Scott Foley, who previously played Ghostface killer Roman Bridger in Scream 3, in an unknown role. He is the latest legacy star to join the cast, which also includes franchise newcomers Joel McHale, Isabel May, Anna Camp, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, and Mark Consuelos.
What This Means For Scream 7
Roman Bridger Could Return
Roman Bridger, who was the half-brother of consummate final girl Sidney Prescott, was supposedly killed at the end of the 2000 sequel in which he appeared. The Scream movies have now set a precedent for supposedly ᴅᴇᴀᴅ characters coming back to life when Hayden Panettiere reprised the role of Kirby Reed (who had been thought to have succumbed to her stab wounds) in the most recent installment. However, there is no precedent for any Ghostface killer returning in the flesh.
Kirby Reed supposedly died in 2011’s Scream 4 before returning in 2023’s Scream VI.
Ghostface performers have only returned to the franchise twice in the past. One of the 1996 movie’s Ghostface stars, Matthew Lillard, had uncredited cameos as a partygoer in Scream 2 and as the actor playing the killer in the fictional movie Stab, and 2022 Ghostface Jack Quaid reprised his role as Richie Kirsch. However, the latter only appeared in the Scream VI cast via projected footage that was sH๏τ before the character’s death. While this could also be the case for Foley, it seems that he may appear either as Roman or a major character who looks similar to him.
Our Take On Scott Foley’s Scream 7 Casting
He Should Play A New Character
While his return is exciting, it would probably be better for Foley to be playing a new character in Scream 7. Kirby’s return already threatened the continuity of the franchise, potentially undermining the emotional stakes involved in the deaths of major characters such as Dewey (David Arquette) and Randy (Jamie Kennedy). Rather than having Foley play Roman, the movie could feature him as a lookalike or even a long-lost twin brother, which could provide the movie with a satirically melodramatic plot twist without sacrificing the franchise’s stakes.
