The killer school dance at the center of Fear Street: Prom Queen has been revealed in a set of new images. The upcoming Fear Street: Prom Queen is the fourth installment in Netflix’s Fear Street movie franchise, which is adapted from R.L. Stine’s series of young adult horror novels of the same name. Set in the fictional town of Shadyside in 1988, it follows a group of prom queen candidates who are targeted by a mysterious killer. The ensemble cast includes India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston.
Netflix has now shared a collection of first-look images from Fear Street: Prom Queen, which premieres in Summer 2025. The first shows a student covered in blood while being menaced by a killer in a shiny, red, hooded jacket that perfectly matches her prom dress. Another shows the killer raising a weapon over their head while a student runs away and another beckons from a broken window above. The third shows the killer wearing black gloves and holding open a book with pH๏τos of the 1988 Shadyside High prom queen candidates.
The fourth image shows two students running down a dark, empty school hallway, while the final image shows two students facing off in a confrontation at the dance itself. See the full-size images below:
What This Means For Fear Street: Prom Queen
The Movie Pays Homage To Slasher History
These images reveal that the upcoming Fear Street movie will pay homage to iconic slasher movies in more ways than simply being set in the late 1980s. One of the major homages to classic slasher тιтles is, for perhaps obvious reasons, a variety of references to the original 1980 movie Prom Night, starring Jamie Lee Curtis. While the setting and the chase scene through an empty hallway both reference the movie, so does the killer using a scrapbook-style collection of pH๏τos to keep track of their victims.
Prom Night spawned three sequels through 1991, followed by a remake starring Brittany Snow in 2008.
However, these images also reference an even older subgenre. The black-gloved killer is a common trope of the Italian giallo movies, a group of proto-slashers that had their heyday in the 1970s. The lurid red of the killer’s costume also seems to be a throwback to the giallo genre, as the Italian murder mystery movies were typically drenched in bold colors. This shows that the filmmakers behind Fear Street: Prom Queen have more on their mind than just a surface-level exploration of the slasher genre.
Our Take On The Fear Street: Prom Queen Images
Its Franchise Connections Are Unclear
So far, it is unclear if Fear Street: Prom Queen will feature any previous Fear Street characters from the interconnected trilogy that debuted in 2021. Given the fact that none of the characters depicted in the images seem to be familiar faces from the franchise, it is possible that the movie could be a fully standalone anthology entry. However, it still takes place in Shadyside, so some of the non-teen characters could be older versions of those seen in the second installment, the summer camp slasher Fear Street Part Two: 1978.
