Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2 Gets A Major Boost With New Cast & Director Update

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are in final negotiations to reprise their iconic roles in a sequel to the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. The original film followed two quirky best friends, Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow), who lie about their careers to impress their classmates at their ten-year high school reunion, leading to hilarious and heartfelt moments of self-discovery. Over the years, the movie has gained a devoted following, celebrated for its humor, fashion, and an unforgettable dance sequence to Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kudrow and Sorvino are poised to continue their buddy-comedy journey with a Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion sequel. The actors will also serve as executive producers on the project, which will be directed by Tim Federle (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series). Original screenwriter Robin Schiff, and showrunner of Netflix’s hit Emily in Paris, has returned to pen the sequel, with veteran producer Laurence Mark also on board.

What Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2 Means

Revisiting A Cult Classic With The Same Characters And Team

The return of Kudrow and Sorvino, along with original screenwriter Robin Schiff, suggests that the sequel will aim to capture the charm and humor that made the original film a beloved classic. Also known for his award-nominated work on Ferdinand, Federle’s involvement could bring a fresh, contemporary feel to Romy and Michele’s world while staying true to its offbeat and heartfelt spirit—and hopefully including another iconic dance sequence with Alan Cumming, though his return is not confirmed just yet.

This isn’t the first attempt to revisit Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion—the 2005 prequel series Romy and Michele: In the Beginning attempted to tell the duo’s origin story as they take on Los Angeles, but without Kudrow and Sorvino, it failed to connect with its devoted cult following in the same way. By bringing back the original stars and creative team, Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2 has the opportunity to deliver a sequel that feels like a true continuation of the ’90s classic rather than a spinoff.

Our Take On Romy & Michele’s Long-Awaited Return

The Ultimate Reunion We Didn’t Know We Needed

A true Romy and Michele sequel with Kudrow and Sorvino back in action is a cult-classic recipe for follow-up success. The original film was a perfect mix of absurd comedy, heartfelt friendship, and iconic fashion, and with the original creative team returning, the Schiff and Federle sequel has the best sH๏τ at recapturing that magic. If done right, Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2 could be a nostalgic yet fresh celebration of this quirky, lovable duo and their enduring friendship.
