Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Filming Locations Include Where Homer’s Epic Actually Takes Place

Filming locations for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey have been revealed, and the director will shoot his adaptation where Homer’s epic actually takes place. After Oppenheimer grossed nearly $1 billion and won Best Picture, Nolan’s next movie will be an adaptation of the Ancient Greek epic poem that follows Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nolan’s film once again features an all-star ensemble that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.

Now, with shooting set to start in about two months, the filming locations for Nolan’s adaptation have been revealed. According to Variety, Nolan will shoot The Odyssey partly in Sicily and specifically the island of Favignana known as “goat island” which, according to scholars, is believed to be where parts of Homer’s epic actually take place. The Odyssey is also expected to shoot in Sicily’s Eolian Islands, though the majority of the Sicily-based scenes will be sH๏τ in Favignana. Additional filming locations include the U.K. and Morocco.

What The Odyssey’s Filming Locations Mean For The Movie

They Continues A Christopher Nolan Career Trend

By shooting in Sicily and specifically the island of Favignana, where Homer’s epic is believed to take place, The Odyssey will continue a career trend for Christopher Nolan. Like many of his past films, The Odyssey will be sH๏τ mostly on location. For instance, his latest film Oppenheimer was sH๏τ almost entirely on location in Los Alamos and Princeton, save for the one scene in the Oval Office which obviously had to be filmed on a set. The Odyssey will continue this trend for Nolan and be sH๏τ in real locations across the world.

The Odyssey will be sH๏τ using brand-new IMAX film technology and is expected to be Nolan’s most expensive film ever with an estimated budget of $250 million. In turn, The Odyssey could incorporate more real locations than any other Nolan film and, by using cutting-edge IMAX technology, the director should capture them in a way that he’s never done before. For instance, the picturesque isle of Favignana, part of the Egadi archipelago off Sicily’s northwest coast, is believed to be where Homer imagined Odysseus and his crew stopping to roast goats and replenish their supplies.

Even though The Odyssey is a mythic action epic, Nolan appears to be approaching the production as he would any of his other films by shooting mostly on location. By also incorporating cutting-edge IMAX technology, The Odyssey could end up being one of Nolan’s most visually stunning films and, by once again shooting on location, it could also end up being an incredibly faithful adaptation of its source material. By shooting on location and using new IMAX technology, The Odyssey has the potential to be Nolan’s most visually immersive and historically authentic film yet.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is scheduled for release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
